Banners bring pride, spirit to community

here are many, many worthwhile causes that positively impact the lives of individuals and communities.

We count Downtown Lock Haven Inc.’s Hometown Hero Banner Program among them.

The Express community newspaper is proud to be a partner to the local nonprofit merchants group, its partners and all of the banner sponsors and families who have supported the program since it was launched in 2008.

The newspaper launched a series entitled, “Lives Behind the Banners” shortly after the initial banner unveiling ceremony.

The Express then published two books, Lives Behind the Banners Vols. 1 and 2, also in support of the program.

All the while, the banner program spread to many, many other communities.

Why?

Pride.

We are so proud of those who sacrifice and serve, no matter what branch of the military.

We are equally proud of our emergency first-responders and the program’s recognition of their service.

The pride that these colorful Hometown Hero banners bring to families and — importantly — to the community is inestimable.

The banners are a reflection of what a community — people — deem important.

They bring us together.

They inspire reverence.

They help to show our children what is important in life: Service to others.

Congratulations to Downtown Lock Haven, which is sponsoring this morning’s banner unveiling ceremony.

It starts with music at 9:30 a.m. on the floating stage at the amphitheatre along the river downtown.

It will be a glorious morning.

Recognizing and honoring those who serve and protect must be an unending gesture.
