El Trabajo!

STANLEY GOULD

All those letters complaining about immigrants, documented or otherwise, “stealing” the jobs of hard-working Americans, and what is a recent headline across the nation?

“Se busca ayudante: Immigrants sought for labor shortage in recovery,” a story about the use of “day labor” in the wake of Hurricane Harvey in Houston, Texas.

So long as companies and individuals think they can get away with paying people “day wages,” immigrants, documented and otherwise, will flock to this country in search of whatever work, legal or otherwise, they can find.

“Hard-working Americans” are not seeking day labor; they want jobs with decent wages, legal working conditions, and benefits.

Immigrants may not be so picky!

The problem is not with the immigrants, it’s with those who think they can get away with paying “day laborers” less than the minimum wage.

The problem is not with the immigrants, it’s with us.
