Backbone

JOHN YOUNG

Williamsport

A recent letter writer suggested one reason President Trump was elected is because he possesses a backbone. On the contrary, when conducting foreign policy Trump usually reveals the lack of a backbone.

Was it a strong backbone when Trump stood shoulder to shoulder with Vladimir Putin in Helsinki and chose to believe him rather than the entire U.S. intelligence community regarding Russian election interference?

Was it a strong backbone when Trump decided to casually brush off the insidious and gruesome murder of a journalist by the leader of Saudi Arabia, commenting, “bad things happen?”

Tough talk indeed.

Was it a strong backbone when Trump took Kim Jong Un “at his word,” when Kim denied he knew anything about the torture and death of U.S. student Otto Warmbier?

When provided hard evidence and personal opportunity to confront Putin, Saudi Arabia, or Kim, Trump chooses to coddle them instead.

He prefers to pamper our adversaries instead of defending U.S. values. His behavior in these instances reveals his lack of a backbone.

And now, the President chooses yet again to go on another rant trashing the late John McCain.

It takes a cowardly, spineless individual to repeatedly attack a deceased former U.S. military officer, POW, senator, and Presidential candidate.

Cowardly and spineless.
