Fashion statements

I just have to respond to a letter from a writer who railed against mask-wearing.

Her reasoning seems to center around the fact that purchased masks either come from China or feature advertising in their design. In February I told my adult daughter that face masks were going to become fashion statements, and in many cases they have. And that is a good thing!

Medical science tells us daily that mask-wearing lessens the spread of disease, so why don’t we all find a way to try to enjoy our masks? I admit that I’d rather not have to wear a mask every time I leave home, but I do find a bit of pleasure when another mask-wearer says, “I like your mask.”

And school kids are finding face masks can be another expression of their individuality, and they actually wear them. Everyone has several options in style, design, and manufacturer for their masks.

My daughter makes custom masks for herself and friends, my daughter-in-law sells handmade masks, and I make my own masks for myself and family members.

You don’t even need a sewing machine to construct a simple face mask; just a clean discarded T-shirt or other fabric and some common sense.

And, of course those face masks must be washed regularly! Mine go into the laundry as soon as I get back home from an outing.

There is really no good excuse for not wearing a mask in public. Just poor excuses.
