WINGATE — Coming off of a 1-1 performance at the Cowanesque Valley Tip-Off Tournament where they won one game and lost another, a young Bucktail varsity team looked to continue a good start when they hosted Austin last night in their home opener.

In what Coach Dave Pentz called a “flat” performance, the Bucks were outscored 37-17 in the second of a game that they trailed by just three at the half.

“We completely lacked passion, we seemed tired particularly in the second half but even in the first we were just a step off tonight,” Pentz said following the game.

Bucktail’s Liam Dwyer hit some late shots in the first and second quarters keeping the game close in the first half.

Dwyer pulled up from near half court as the first quarter buzzer blew hitting a three point bucket that closed the frame out at 13-11 with Austin leading.

Liam scored a game high 20 points including two quick shots to end the half and pull the Bucks to a 29-26 deficit at the half.

It was Austin who came out inspired in the third quarter, however, as they forced 11 Bucktail turnovers and outscored the home team, 18-6. Austin would hit seven 3-point shots as they cruised to a 68-43 win.

The lone highlight of the third quarter for the home team came near the 4:00 minute mark when Gabe Conway and Gavin Becker set up a perfect give and go in which Becker took a Conway pass and rifled it back into a slashing Conway who threw in a lay-up. The play put the Bucks down 42-32 and that would be as close as the Bucks would get again.

Austin’s Mason Valenti paced the visiting team with 14 second half points after scoring just two in the first half.

The schedule is not kind to the Bucks who are scheduled to be at Millville tonight before hosting Muncy on Friday evening.
