Lady Lion O’Donnell selected as Tewaaraton nominee

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senior Katie O’Donnell (West Chester, Pa.) has been named a Tewaaraton Award nominee as one of the top-25 players in women’s college lacrosse when the list was revealed on Thursday afternoon.

From this group of 25, five finalists will be chosen on May 10 and have the opportunity to join their male counterparts at the 18th annual Tewaaraton Award Ceremony on May 31, 2018 at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of the American Indian.

Fifteen different schools are represented on this year’s list with seven Big Ten student-athletes earning a nomination from three different schools. Maryland, Northwestern and Boston College each had three players nominated to lead all teams.

O’Donnell is a first-time Tewaaraton nominee joining seven other Nittany Lions who hold that honor including her teammate, junior Madison Carter (Davidsonville, Md.), who was a nominee alongside Steph Lazo ’17 last season.

O’Donnell currently leads the team and ranks second in the Big Ten with 51 goals on the season, a mark good for 26th nationally. Earlier this season, O’Donnell became the 14th player in program history to reach 200 career points and she is currently tied for sixth with 216 for her career.

The senior also ranks fourth on the Penn State all-time goals list with 193 for her career, which is good for sixth among active players across the nation. O’Donnell recently had a 38-game goal streak snapped as she was held off the scoresheet during a 21-13 setback at Stony Brook on Tuesday.

O’Donnell, who was a 2018 Inside Lacrosse Preseason All-American, has earned Big Ten Offensive Player of the week twice this season as well as earning IWLCA Player of the Week and Brine/US Lacrosse Player of the Week on April 10.

Penn State closes its regular season on Saturday as they host Michigan at 2 p.m. as part of senior day before traveling to Ann Arbor for the 2018 Big Ten Tournament on May 4-6.
