BELLEFONTE — No lead is ever safe during a Mountain League game.

Whenever two Mountain League baseball teams go head-to-head, you can throw out the records and all you can do is sit back and settle in for a battle.

Such was the case Tuesday afternoon when Penns Valley traveled to Bellefonte to take home the Red Raiders.

Holding a two-run lead in the seventh, a miscue on a strike out and two Rams singles later, Penns Valley picked up the late win 7-6.

“They put the ball in place an awful lot. They put the pressure on our defense and we tell our kids to put the ball in play and put pressure on the defense. That’s one of the things that makes us successful and they did the exact same thing,” Bellefonte coach Jon Clark said. “They put the pressure on us and we didn’t step up today. We didn’t execute the way we should have and as a result were mental errors and fielding errors. Kudos to them.”

Picking up the win for the Rams was Logan Snyder while freshman hurler Seth Shuey took the hard luck loss.

Multiple hitters for Penns Valley were Cam Sheaffer (3-for-4), Jakob Daniels (2-for-3, run, RBI), and Dylan Treaster (2-for-4, RBI).

Bellefonte got strong offensive efforts from Dylan Deitrich (2-for-4, run), Eric Peggs (3-for-4, 2 runs) and CJ Lauck (2-for-3).

Going into the top of the seventh, Bellefonte needed just three outs.

Shuey struck out Cole Breon, but Clayton Upcraft singled.

Snyder drove the call into left centerfield for the second out.

Up came Matthew Tobias. Tobias struck out swinging, but the ball skidded back to the back stop allowing Tobias to reach base. Snyder scored on an overthrow to first and Tobias moved up to second.

Jakob Daniels brought home Tobias on a single and later scored on another Red Raider miscue, giving the Rams the slim 7-6 lead.

That would be all Snyder would need as he sent Bellefonte down in order to secure the victory.

Penns Valley opened the scoring in the second when Kauffman went yard, making it 1-0.

With Eric Peggs on third, in the bottom of the inning, Daniel Catchmark bounced in fielders choice, allowing Peggs to knot the game at one.

The Red Raiders went up 4-1 in the third when Bobby Marsh took one over the fence culminating in a 3-run round tripper, making it 4-1.

But Penns Valley would keep hanging around and keeping within striking distance until the seventh.

Bellefonte will try to regroup and get back in the diamond when they face Tyrone on Thursday.
