BELLEFONTE — Bellefonte’s defense crumbled in the crunch-moments of the game.

Trailing just 6-3 to Philipsburg Osceola (PO), they surrendered two grand slams in the seventh inning before eventually falling to the Mountaineers, 16-4.

Both of Bellefonte’s losses are to PO as the Raiders dropped to 12-2 on the year.

“Philipsburg is a very good team,” Bellefonte coach Fred Caldwell said. “We did not have a good game in any aspects today. But it showed us a lot of things we need to clean up going forward and getting close to playoffs.”

Despite losing 16-4, Bellefonte was out-hit just 11-9. Mallorie Smith posted a 3-for-3 hitting day and Hanna Lauck went 2-for-2 hitting with 2 RBI’s. Lissy Przybyz went 2-2 as the three athletes combined for six of Bellefonte’s nine hits.

“We didn’t hit as well today, and credit goes to [PO pitcher] Kam Harris,” Caldwell said. “She did a great job of pitching. We just didn’t make a lot of adjustments that we needed to, and their pitcher did a great job.”

Starting pitcher Lexy Rogers was pulled after surrendering a sixth inning leadoff home run to Madison Lucas, who put the Mountaineers up 6-3. She threw four strikeouts and allowed six runs in five innings.

Mallorie Smith made a relief appearance in the sixth and managed to exit the inning unscathed. In the seventh, she gave up two grand slams to the Mountaineers who found a groove late.

Both Bellefonte pitchers struggled with their command. They surrendered a combined four home runs and hit three PO batters in the evening.

“I don’t think it’s any secret that Lexy Rogers is our No.1 pitcher, and she had some rough innings today,” Caldwell said. “We brought Mallorie in, who’s really our center fielder, but she’s good enough to fill in and do what we ask her to do, which we really appreciate her doing that. But it just wasn’t her day either.”

“Philipsburg just hit the ball well, they’re a good team.”

Down 16-3, Hanna Lauck recorded an RBI double to give the Raiders another run.

Moving forward this season, Caldwell wants to see progression in his players.

“Everybody on the team just needs to pick it up at this point,” he said. “But we’ll be fine. [Tuesday’s game] just shows us what we need to work on.”

Bellefonte returns to action Thursday with an away game against Hollidaysburg. They have a quick turnaround with another road contest against Tyrone on Friday.
