Local athletes awarded Centre County HOF Scholarships

BELLEFONTE — Entering into its third year the Centre County Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame has been able to provide scholarships for 12 athletes from the county’s six high schools.

Recipients, who were selected by the schools, must have won at least one varsity letter, been a major part of a team’s success and provided leadership. They also must have a strong academic background and be a good citizen who is involved in both school and community activities.

The 300-dollar scholarship is financially supported by Reliance Bank and is awarded to a male and female athlete at each school.

“We’re pleased to support the scholarships,” said Centre County chapter president Ron Pifer. “We’re grateful to Reliance Bank and to the guidance departments at the schools for helping us recognize these athletes.”

The athletes received their scholarships at each school’s awards ceremony earlier this month.

Here are the winners, in alphabetical order of their schools. All information is provided by the schools.

BALD EAGLE AREA

Adazia Mellot and Trent Donley.

Mellott was a cheerleader, member of the track and field team and the competitive cheerleader team. She won the Mountain League discus title and was the school’s Burl Flick Award winner for girls track and field. She won the Eagle Cheer Award and received the Milesburg American Legion scholarship.

She was a member of the National Honor Society, the Spanish Club and the marching band. She participated in the Outreach activities at her church and was a volunteer for Special Olympics Floor hockey. She also was a team member on mission trips. She is planning to attend Geneva College and major in nursing.

Donley lettered in baseball, soccer and basketball. He was a first-team Mountain League choice in soccer and was the team’s MVP twice. He was also a first team Mountain League choice in baseball and received the Burl Flick Award for baseball.

He volunteered for Special Olympics. He is going to attend Pennsylvania College of Technology.

BELLEFONTE

Dylan Dietrich and Alexis Wetzler.

Wetzler was a first team infield selection in softball and was chosen the Outstanding Female Athlete by her peers.

She received a grant-in-aid to Bloomsburg where she will play softball and major in psychology.

Dietrich won eight letters at Bellefonte, three in football and baseball, and two in basketball. He was a two-time Mountain League selection as a defensive back nd was chosen as the Outstanding Male Athlete by his peers. He plans to attend Penn State and major in mechanical engineering.

PENNS VALLEY

Dayna Brown and Justin Sands.

Brown letter in soccer, basketball and softball and achieved a 3.7 GPA

Sands lettered in football and had a 4.0 GPA.

PHILIPSBURG-OSCEOLA

Loryn Hughes and Brandon Anderson.

Hughes won 10 letters at P-O, four in soccer, four in basketball and two in track. She was a Mountie Mentor and a member of the National Honor Society, the student council, Letterwinners club, Prom Committee and Key Club. She plans to attend Clarion University.

Anderson earned three letters in football and three in wrestling. He was a Mountie Mentor and a member of the National Honor Society.

He plans to attend Lock Haven University.

STATE COLLEGE

Jacob Whipple and Jacqueline Peffer

Whipple lettered in soccer, swimming track and volleyball. He was a two-time district champion in diving and placed second and third in the Mid-Penn Conference in diving. He won the Coaches Award in swimming and owns the school record in 11 dives.

He was a teaching assistant, class secretary, class treasurer, a member of the National Honor Society the Leadership Council and was on the High Honor Roll. He plans to attend Penn State.

Peffer lettered in cross country, indoor track and outdoor track.

She was a member of the high school band, the Debate Club, the Quiz Bowl, FBLA, was a Spanish tutor, the editor of Lions’ Digest, was a National AP scholar and a National Merit Scholarship semifinalist. She plans to attend Harvard.
