Red Raiders Boy’s Soccer will be young for new year

BELLEFONTE — Red Raiders soccer had a successful season in 2017. They finished the year 13-6 after a 5-2 loss to Holidaysburg in the district championship.

In 2018, they’re looking to return to the title game and bring the crown home to Bellefonte.

“The guys are looking forward to the season,” Bellefonte coach Scott Martz said. “They have been working hard. In the offseason we had some guys playing with Penn United, and we did a camp before the season started.”

Bellefonte’s identify is its offense. They have numerous athletes who score in a moment’s notice.

“Our strengths for the year will be our offense,” Martz said. “We have a lot of guys that can score, so we should be strong there. “

On defense, they lost starting goalkeeper Josh Gaus, as the unit is one of the team’s biggest question marks.

“We need to improve defensively,” Martz said. We lost four starters and our goalkeeper from last year. We have Andrew Sharp and AJ Hovis, who played part time for us back there, but other than those two, we’ll be young. But Zach Speary will be in goal for us and had a good start to the season. ”

Bellefonte’s theme for the year is to “never give up, don’t stop playing,” Martz said. If the team follows its coach’s advice, they could have a rematch with Holidaysburg in the district championship game

“We have raised the expectation for soccer at Bellefonte, and these seniors are part of the reason for that,” Martz said.
