WINGATE – The Bellefonte boys soccer team finished Saturday with a third place finish at the Bald Eagle Area Invitational.

Despite falling to a very strong Mifflinburg team in the first round 5-0, the Red Raiders bounced back and took the consolation contest, 5-0, over Bishop Guilfoyle to capture the third place nod.

Bellefonte coach Scott Martz was happy with the effort his team put forth.

“The first game I knew was going to be a little tough because it was the first game all year. We have a lot of new players, playing in new spots. That’s a lot of young kids, a lot of sophomores and freshmen starting. So I knew it would be a little iffy in the first game. I didn’t think we played a terrible game. Mifflinburg is really good, ” Martz said. “I didn’t think we played a bad game but we just couldn’t get our offense flowing. The second game they finally started to see the creases on offense. So they got the holes and had a lot of good shots.”

In the consolation, the Red Raiders had numerous players get in the action as they shut out BG.

In the first, the Red Raider Evan Nyquist caught a pass from Andrew Hovis for the team’s first goal at 32:38.

Midway through the period, Bellefonte got another chance for a goal when a Bishop Guilfoyle defenseman was called for a handball, giving the Red Raiders a penalty kick.

Nyquist got the call again and did not disappoint, sending penalty kick through, giving them a 2-0 advantage with 19:55 still showing on the clock.

Teammate Joey Maggs would get into the action at the 11-minute mark, adding an insurance goal as the clock wound down to start the intermission.

Bellefonte wasted little time as they scored a goal minutes after starting the second half.

Nyquist, who finished with a hat trick got the ball and blasted it home off an assist from Maggs.

As the clock got closer to the finish of the game, another Red Raider would get their name on the score sheet.

Gabe Koller hit the final goal of the game with 21:05 left to put the game on ice for the “Red and Black attack”

Bellefonte outshot Bishop Guilfoyle

22-6 and led in corners by a 6-4 margin. Goalie Zach Spearly had three saves.
