BELLEFONTE – Don’t let the first quarter fool you.
Despite trailing 8-6 Friday night after one period, the Bellefonte boys basketball team sizzled in the final three quarters to defeat a very spunky and aggressive Philipsburg-Osceola team, 68-45, on its home court.
With the 23-point victory, the Red Raiders remain a perfect 3-0 going into a Tuesday showdown with a tough Central team in another Mountain League showdown.
“I think overall there were a lot of contributors. I thought we looked good in the second half. I thought our second quarter was obviously better than our first,” Bellefonte coach Kris Glunt said. “We did start out a little slow but we came around. It was a good team effort.
Offensively for the Red Raiders, there were a total of seven players that worked themselves into the scorebooks.
They were led by Noah Badger’s double-double effort as he posted 20 points and snagged 15 boards.
Teammate Caleb Rockey was also as strong, posting a double-double of his own with a 12-point and 10-rebound effort en route to the victory.
Nate Tice helped Bellefonte from beyond the arc, posting three triples as he finished with an 18-point effort.
Teammate Nick Fisher just missed double-figure scoring with eight.
Philipsburg-Osceola was led offensively by Carson Jones who had 15 and was the only double-digit scorers for the Mounties. Teammates Ryan Whitehead and Isiah Scalzo both chipped in with eight apiece.
Things started slowly for both teams as the first point wasn’t scored until 4:28 left in the period.
Badger got the scoring started with a runner in the lane.
P-O bounced back on the next possession when Scalzo popped a jumper to tie things up.
Not afraid to go to the hoop, Badger drew a foul shot after a bucket in the paint. However, he missed the foul shot, leaving it 4-2.
The Mounties bounced back as Jones hit from the inside.
Rockey, who just came off the bench, put his team ahead after a drive and a bucket in the lane.
However, Tyler Doyle tied it again with a jumper with 2:07 remaining.
Both defenses stood strong the final two minutes until Jones snuck through and Kaye’s got a shot in at the buzzer, giving them their first lead of the game.
Bellefonte exploded in the second quarter.
Rockey started the scoring with another strong drive inside, tying it at eight.
But Philipsburg-Osceola went back ahead on a triple from beyond the arc by Scalzo to up the lead to 11-8.
From there, the Red Raiders went on an 8-2 run.
In the run, it was Badger and Rockey leading the way with four each.
After a Mountie bucket, the “Red and Black attack” went on another run to finish off the first half. In the scoring spree, Bellefonte scored 12 while holding P-O to just two down the stretch in the first half.
At the beginning of the intermission, the Red Raiders opened things up by leading 28-15.
But Bellefonte didn’t let the rally stop at the halftime buzzer, the Red Raiders continued to take over the game, especially on the rebound side. Bellefonte out rebounded Philipsburg-Osceola 43-20.
In the third, Bellefonte held off the Mounties scoring-wise, 16-10, to extend its lead to 19 going into the final stanza.
With a 44-28 advantage, the Red Raiders kept things going offensively as they once again went over the 20-point mark in the period, hitting 24 while the Mounties countered with 20.
In the JV contest, Bellefonte was also successful, winning 51-32.
