Keystone Intermediates open Eastern Regional with 7-5 win over Commack

FROM STAFF REPORTS

The Keystone Intermediate squad opened the Eastern Regional with a 7-5 win over the Commack Little League All Stars in Long Island, New York. The win advanced Keystone in the winners’ bracket.

“We played against the host team, the crowd was pretty loud and the crowd was active,” Keystone manager Scott Fravel said. “And It was 90 degrees and humid so the kids had to really battle to get this win. It was definitely a total-team effort and they overcame a lot of challenges.”

Keystone developed an early 3-0 lead before Commack’s offense appeared. Commack recorded five runs in the bottom of the third to take a 5-3 lead, but Keystone wasn’t phased .

“At that point the kids could’ve rolled over if they wanted to, but they didn’t,” Fravel said. “They never quit and they kept grinding.”

Keystone added another four runs in the fifth to reclaim the lead 7-5.

Brady Myers closed the game on the mound for Keystone. He entered in the seventh, with two runners on, and fanned three batters to secure the 7-5 win.

Myers also had a strong day at the plate and contributed a home run on offense. Elek Fravel cracked another two dingers at the plate as Keystone’s power hitters came through in the clutch during the fifth inning.

“We were down 5-3, had two runners on and Elek was at the plate. He had a ten pitch at-bat before he delivered that home run,” Fravel explained of Elek’s three-run blast. “Then the next batter up was Brady Myers, who followed with a solo home run, which gave us a two-run lead.”

Elek finished the game 4-for-4 with six RBIs. Keystone totaled 10 hits in the game.

Connor Foltz was the winning pitcher. He threw a team-high five strikeouts in three scoreless innings.

Keystone returns today, 9 a.m, against the Berlin, Maryland Little League All Stars. It’s the same Maryland team who eliminated Keystone last season in the Mid Atlantic Regional at the Majors level.

“We’re definitely excited for the rematch,” Fravel said. “It’s gonna be a good baseball game. Every team up here is top notch.”
