Local runner shatters Eastern States 100 Ultrathon record

Mill Hall native Wesley Atkinson broke the Eastern States 100 Ultrathon record Saturday with a time of 18:23:47. Atkinson’s time broke previous record holder Devon Olson’s time (20:30:36), by nearly two hours.

The Eastern States 100 is a 100-mile mountain trail race through the mountains of the PA Wilds Pine Creek Valley and the PA Grand Canyon. The race is intentionally scheduled for the warmest weeks of August to intensify the running conditions for the athletes.

Runners are allotted 36 hours to complete the race, and 133 of the 224 registered racers from across the globe completed the race.

Atkinson’s younger brother, Nevin Atkinson, finished first in the 19-and-under division with a time of 31:03:31.
