BELLEFONTE- Through four contests this season Bellefonte struggled to generate the sufficient scoring needed to win games. But on Monday the offense awakened and produced more scores against Central than they previously totaled all year.

Led by Mallorie Smith’s four-goal day the Red Raiders bested Central at home, 5-1, to earn its first win of the season and its first victory at the newly-renovated Rogers Stadium. The win increased Bellefonte’s record to 1-4 and head coach Stacey Miller is optimistic the victory will energize Bellefonte moving forward.

“I’m super excited for these girls today,” Miller said. “They’ve been working hard, but we had a rough start to the season last week. We just had to take a deep breath, relax, stay the course and know that the success would come. One of the things that we’ve been focusing on is coming together as a team, and I feel like tonight they came together on the field.”

Mallorie Smith had another sensational game as she posted four scores to increase her season-total to eight goals.

“Mallorie had a great game with putting four goals in the back of the net,” Miller said of Smith, who’s Bellefonte’s all-time leading goal scorer with 98. “She did a fantastic job of finishing, but I have to give credit to her teammates who got her the ball. All those people behind her really worked their butts off to be able to get the ball pushed forward and to put her in the right position to finish.”

Smith opened the scoring early for Bellefonte. Following a corner kick she corralled the loose ball in front of Central ‘s goalkeeper and sent the ball into the left side of the net at the 6:38 mark. Her second goal occured later in the half when she rebounded Maddie Morelli’s deflected shot and launched the ball past the goalkeeper to widen Bellefonte’s lead, 2-0.

Morelli set Smith up again in the second half for her third goal of the game. Morelli connected with Smith who was dashing down the center of the field. Smith broke away from the defender before having her shot blocked, only to scoop the loose ball and return it for her third goal of the game. She later added another goal in the period to extend Bellefonte’s lead, 4-1.

Mia Johnson added an insurance goal at the 77 minute mark to strengthen Bellefonte’s lead, 5-1. The goal was Bellefonte’s first score this season by a player other than Smith as head coach Stacey Miller is hopeful to develop a balanced-scoring attack.

“One of the things we’ve been working on is finding other players and getting other people to finish,” Miller said. “We’ve been really putting the pressure on Mia to put the ball in the back of the net, so it was really fantastic to see her be able to get that ball tonight and finish.”

Bellefonte’s defensive play was equally impressive Monday. They surrendered a season-low one score as goalkeeper Emily Culp nearly had a shutout. Culp posted eight saves while surrendering just one second half score.

“We’ve had Emily in the goal the past three games, and she’s getting better with every game,” Miller said. ” She was on fire back there and she was talking and communicated with her defense. I feel like they came together as a unit, defensively, tonight.”

Bellefonte returns Wednesday in an away matchup versus Tyrone scheduled for 4 p.m.

“We’re expecting a tough matchup with Tyrone,” Miller said. “They have a tough group of freshmen that came in and are pretty strong, and I’m sure that they’re going to be looking to contribute on the field. We’re ready for a battle because we know it’s going to be a tough one.”
