Strong second half powers Lock Haven men’s soccer to a dominant 5-1 victory

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Lock Haven University men’s soccer team (2-1) defeated the University of the District of Columbia (1-2) after a lengthy weather delay. The weather could not stop the Bald Eagles as it was another offensive explosion as five different goal scorers found the back of the net for Lock Haven. With four goals against Felician and five more Wednesday, the Bald Eagles have outscored their opponents 9-1 over the past two games.

In the eighth minute, Andrea DiSomma (Lancaster, Pa./ Manheim Township) made a cutting run behind the defense and beat a defender before being taken down in the box for a penalty kick. Brian Flatter (Frederick, Md./Oakdale) would step up and bury the penalty to give the Bald Eagles a 1-0 lead.

The Firebirds equalized in the 43rd minute on a perfectly curled free kick from 22 yards out which left the keeper with no chance. The teams entered halftime tied 1-1 and due to a weather delay, play would not resume until an hour and a half later.

After coming out of the weather delay Lock Haven would turn up the pressure scoring 4 goals in the second half en route to a 5-1 win.

In the 57th minute of play Flatter and Andrew Moore (Lancaster, Pa./ Conestoga Valley) once again would connect on a corner. Moore made a back post run for Flatter who put it right on his head and was finished off the cross bar and in.

Just 47 seconds later DiSomma collected a beautiful pass from Shane Colegrove (Athens, Pa./ Athens) who took 3 touches and beat the keeper far post. The goal marks the first of his career for the Bald Eagles.

Lock Haven would find the back of the net again in the 74th minute of play. Matthew McDermott (Stroudsburg, Pa./Stroudsburg) collected a loose ball inside the 18-yard box then fired a shot near post beating the keeper and put the Bald Eagles up 4-1

In the final stages of the game Zane Puhala (Brockway, Pa./ Brockway Area) received a perfect pass from Brand Brackbill (Mifflintown, Pa./ Juniata) at the top of the box resulting in a powerful strike from Puhala which deflected off a defenders back and into the net. The goal from Puhala would mark his first career goal as well for the Bald Eagles.
