Bellefonte, Jersey Shore, BEA compete in weekend’s BEA Duals

WINGATE — With all of the holiday festivities and hoopla behind them, it was time for the local high school mat teams to jump-start a full speed ahead path to a busy dual meet regular season, and they did that Saturday in the Joel Confer Ford, Toyota, BMW BEA Duals in the Eagles Nest.

Bellefonte and Bald Eagle Area tied for local honors each with a mark of 4-1, while Jersey Shore, although operating by giving up 30 points before they stepped on the mat, finished at 0-5.

Bellefonte (4-1): The Red Raiders defeated Fauquier (42-37), Altoona (49-22), Hollidaysburg (62-15) and Jersey Shore (57-24) after dropping their opening dual to State College (29-41).

Leading the Raiders in the long day of wrestling were Jude Swisher, Ethan Rossman, Ethan Richner and Alex Coppolo with 5-0 marks, while Max Barrier and Aidan O’Shay each posted a mark of 4-1 in their five bouts.

“Overall we went 4-1, but there is still a lot of work to do,” said Bellefonte head coach Mike Maney. “We kind of started out slow, but give State College a lot of credit. They have a really good team the whole way through. One thing we can take away from this is that you can’t afford a slow start, especially when it comes to districts and states, or just like that your season will be gone. We need to come with more intensity right away and there are a number of things we have to work on to get fixed. This was a long day of wrestling, but the guys we have come to depend on, the Richner’s, the Rossman’s, the Swishers went out and got us big bonus points today. Lane Aikey is banged up and hopefully, we can get hime back soon, but overall, our effort was good.”

Bald Eagle Area (4-1): The Eagles began the day with three straight wins over Altoona (43-30), Jersey Shore (49-22) and Fauquier, Va. (40-33) before stumbling at the hands of State College (21-46). Closing out the day on a positive note, the Eagles bounced back to finish the day with a lopsided win over Hollidaysburg (60-12).

Leading the Eagles to their four wins in five starts were Gage McClanahan, David Close, Jeffrey Pifer and Cooper Gilham with spotless 5-0 marks, while Coen Bainey went 4-0 and Noah Foltz narrowly missed a perfect day with a 4-1 mark.

“Overall I think we continued wrestling well,” said BEA head coach Ron Guenot. “They continue to wrestle and compete hard for as long as it takes and that is really what I saw today. For us, it was a good team effort in the five matches we wrestled.

Once again Gage McClenahan continues to dominate people as the state and nationally-ranked matman looks focused and ready to go.

“He knows what he needs to do and he is continuing to work hard every day to get himself in the best shape possible,” said Guenot. “If he does that, I think everything else is going to be fine.”

Jersey Shore: The Bulldogs dropped all five of their matches to State College (12-56), Bald Eagle Area (22-39), Hollidaysburg (29-37), Altoona (34-42) and Bellefonte (24-57).

Despite finishing without a win, the Bulldogs did manage to claim two wrestlers with at least four wins as Liam Goodrich and Hayden Packer both wound up with 4-1 logs for the day.

“We had a lot of good battles going on today and I think we got better and better against better teams as the day went on,” said Shore head coach Crock Herman. “We had two guys go 4-1 and as a young team, we are showing improvement. What makes it frustrating is when you are giving up that many points, it is difficult for the kids to realize that even the points aren’t necessarily showing up on the scoreboard that they are wrestling well. I just tell them to continue to strive to win the small positions and if they do that, we will eventually be able to win the matches.”
