Williamsport Crosscutters don’t anticipate season starting on time

The start of the Williamsport Crosscutters’ season was scheduled for Thursday, June 18, at State College to begin the New York-Penn League season. But with the coronavirus pandemic on-going and social distancing rules having to be enforced, the Crosscutters don’t expect the season to start on time as it was hoping.

The team released a statement Friday regarding the news.

“Due to the continuing situation related to COVID-19 and its effect on public gatherings and sports, the Williamsport Crosscutters do not anticipate the 2020 season starting on time,” the team’s statement said Friday afternoon. “Further, we await word from Major League Baseball and it’s member clubs as to whether they will supply players to MiLB clubs in the current climate.

“As soon as we have a clear picture and an official announcement from MLB and MiLB, we will immediately communicate it to our fans and partners.”

Under Gov. Tom Wolf’s green phase, which went into effect in Lycoming County on Friday, large gatherings are limited to no more than 250 people.

The Crosscutters noted that all ticket sales will remain suspended and its offices will stay closed to the general public. The team encourages its fans to follow the Cutters on social media for the latest information and updates.

“We appreciate everyone’s patience during this uncertain time and we wish you and your families safety and good health,” the Cutters said in its statement.

The Cutters originally were scheduled to have a five-game homestand June 19-23 at Bowman Field against the State College Spikes (June 19-20) and the West Virginia Black Bears (June 21-23).

Williamsport is coming off a 32-43 season in which the Cutters finished 8 1/2 games back in the Pinckney Division. The Cutters were ahead of only the Auburn Doubledays (30-46).

The State College Spikes finished third in the division with a 39-36 record, 1 1/2 games out of first place.
