Central Mountain falls to Milton, 7-1, on the Wildcats’ senior day in girls soccer

MILL HALL – Central Mountain fell to Milton, 7-1, in the Wildcats’ first game on its new surface at Malinak Stadium in girls soccer Saturday morning.

Although the match did not go as planned for the Wildcats, Central Mountain coach Jeff Brinker was pleased with his team’s second half performance in the loss.

“We had two choices: to step up or lay down, and the girls stepped up,” Brinker said.

Brinker recognized the unique circumstances the entire high school athletic community is facing during the times of COVID-19.

“It’s odd to have a senior night your first game home, we’re excited to just be a part of having soccer here at Central mountain,” Brinker said. “We’re every day blessed, every day could be your last day, so were just really excited to get out here and play, we didn’t get the result we wanted today but the second was much better, we made some corrections

The team’s first home match served as the Wildcats senior night, in which they honored Avery Baker, Abby Brinker, Bailey Brungard, Damaris Hall, Hayle McCollin, Olivia Miller, Ithica Phillips and Jocelyn Renninger.

One of the Wildcat seniors, Abby Brinker, scored the team’s only goal when she found a crease in the Black Panthers’ defense and placed the ball in the Black Panther’s goal in the 31st minute.

The second half fared much better for the Wildcats, as the team’s defense stepped up and held the Black Panthers offensive attack to just one goal.

Central Mountain came out with a more aggressive approach on offense to begin the second half. The Wildcats were able to put some pressure on the Milton defense, controlling the tempo of the match. An improvement from the opening half.

For Milton, it was speedy forward Janae Bergey who was Central Mountain’s biggest kryptonite. The Wildcats did not have an answer for the junior, as she tallied four first-half goals for the Black Panthers and followed up with one more in the second half.

Bergey scored three goals in a three minute span, including consecutive goals in under a minute. Aside from Bergey, Milton’s other multi-goal scorer was junior Alexis Beaver, who scored twice. She scored in 18th and 64th minutes.

The Wildcats will be back in action Monday as they host Selinsgrove at 7 p.m.
