Michael Kresovich on football: Bald Eagle Area, Bellefonte find themselves off

Bald Eagle Area earned its first win of the season after running past Huntingdon, 46-8, at home, but the Eagles will not get a chance to play tonight due to COVID-19 complications.

BEA’s scheduled Week 3 game on the road at Penns Valley has been postponed to Friday, Oct. 30. In addition, Bellefonte (0-2) will also have off tonight as the Raiders were scheduled to play Clearfield. The Raiders are still winless after two straight one-score losses to begin the year. Bellefonte fell to Tyrone, 21-13, Week 1 and Central, 24-16, in Week 2.

The Penns Valley football team is quarantining after a player on Clearfield, Penns Valley’s week one opponent, tested positive for COVID-19.

“You truly don’t prep for it because you don’t want it to happen. It’s worse case scenario,” Eagles coach Jesse Nagel said in response to anticipating a game cancelation due to a COVID related issue.

Nagel said Bald Eagle had three potential replacements for the Eagles’ Week 3 game, but none were successful. The Eagles spent their off week focusing on special teams and fixing some issues from the team’s first two games.

The 1-1 Eagles dropped their Week 1 opener against Central, 33-9, and came back a week later to defeat Huntingdon, 46-8, at home.

Nagel said something clicked for his team in the middle of the game, in his team’s loss to Central, and the mid-season bye due to COVID complications came at an unfavorable time for the Eagles.

“We grew up after the first quarter and held our own against central,” Nagel said, “We felt pretty good that our kids were growing up and maturing getting that game experience they need and then bang, we don’t get a chance to play another game.”

Eagles quarterback Garrett Burns is off to an impressive start to the season. The junior has thrown for 400 yards total in the team’s first two games. Owen Irvin has also been putting up solid numbers for the BEA offense, recording back-to-back 100 yard receiving games.

Bald Eagle Area is back in action next Friday, Oct. 1 at home against Tyrone.
