Seasoned Central team defeats Bald Eagle Area in opener, 33-9

WINGATE — It wasn’t quite the start to the season that the Bald Eagle Area football team had hoped for as it opened its season against a very seasoned Central team.

Two first quarter scores in the first quarter by the Dragons gave them a lead that they would never relinquished as they topped the Bald Eagles, 33-9, in the season opener.

“I think the biggest thing is that we are very inexperienced in some spots and they scored twice quick and with inexperience in spots they scored once and then they scored another one. Then I thought we settled in,” said Bald Eagle coach Jesse Nagle. “I thought defensively we settled in outstandingly. We’re going into the half getting the ball trailing 14-2 and we do a roll out punt and then the kid got the ball and some unfortunate things went wrong and he took it to the house.”

Central’s offense looked strong early led by quarterback Jeff Hoenstine, who threw for 174 yards.

It took just three plays for the Dragons to put points on the board after starting at its own 34.

Hoenstine hooked up with Hunter Smith on a 54-yard touchdown pass. With Austin Keith’s kick, Central led 7-0 with just minutes off the clock.

After holding Bald Eagle on its first drive, the Dragons forced a punt and put the ball back into its offense’s hands.

Unlike the first Central drive, the Dragons went on a long, time consuming drive of 13-plays culminating in a 1-yard scoring scamper by running back Parker Gregg, upping it to 14-0 with 2:44 left in the first.

But fortunes started to shift for the Eagles as they forced a saftey after the ball was centered over the head of Hoenstine and into the end zone, cutting it to 14-2.

With the Eagles getting back to ball, they were able to work their way back down to the one thanks to a Garrett Burns to Owen Irwin pass that was good for a 36-yard first and goal.

However, the Dragons defense held and got the ball back.

But Bald Eagle once again kept the Dragons defense at bay, forcing them to kick the ball back to the Eagles.

However, with time running out in the first, Bald Eagle was forced to punt and hen they did they got the ball to Central’s Demetrious Harbaugh who blazed his way to a 70-yard punt return, upping the lead going into the intermission, leading 21-2.

Getting the ball to open the second half did not go so well for the punt team as Burns was taken down before he was able to kick, giving the ball back to Central, deep in Bald Eagle territory.

It took only three plays for the Dragons to pinch in its fourth TD of the game as Hoenstine again went to the air to find Hunter Klotz on the 9-TD reception.

Central’s kick failed and it remained a 26-2 game.

The Dragon’s added another touchdown late in the third to up its lead to 33-2 going into the final stanza.

However, the Eagles continued to battle and work its offense trying to get on the scoreboard.

With its defense getting stronger as the game went on, the offense was finally able to get on the board.

On a fourth-and-19, Burns found Irwin once again, this time for a touchdown of 34 yards to make it a 33-9 game with 7:31 left.

Despite getting some more strong individual efforts by the Eagles, that would be the last points they would get to fall 33-9 in its home opener.

Bald Eagle will be back at home next week to face Huntingdon.
