Bellefonte stumbles against Penns Valley in 28-14 loss Friday night

BELLEFONTE – It was a clash between defending Co-Mountain League teams as Bellefonte and Penns Valley locked horns Friday night at Bellefonte’s Rogers Stadium.

In the end, the Rams were victorious, 28-14.

“I think they (Penns Valley) did a good job running the ball tonight. When they came in, they executed their game plan. Right now we are just not playing consistent enough football to win a game in this league,” said Bellefonte coach Shanon Manning. “Do I think this is a bad football team? By no stretch of the imagination do I think we are a bad football team. But you can’t play football in spots. When you play the Penns Valley’s and the Central’s off the world you can’t, you just can’t play in spots. You have to play complete minutes.”

Penns Valley won the toss but deferred to the second half, giving the ball to the Red Raiders.

Bellefonte started to slowly move the ball to midfield. But a gamble on fourth down failed and gave the ball to Penns Valley close to midfield.

Quarterback Aiden Brinker led the way as he went 9 for 15 for 146 in the night for the Rams. He also muscled out 99-hard fought yards on the ground as well.

Teammate Seth Baney was his go-to guy on the ground while in the air Brinker hooked up with Stephan Ripka three times for touchdowns and a total of four receptions for 102 yards.

Bellefonte got a strong outing from back up quarterback Logan Houser who came off the bench to fill in for an injured Ethan Rossman. Houser went 5 for 10 for 95 yards while Jamal “JJ” Saunders led all Bellefonte rushers with 83-yards rushing.

Penns Valley wasted little time as it posted two first-quarter touchdowns.

On their first touch of the game, the Rams opened on a three-play scoring drive as Aiden Brinker tossed a 45-yard TD pass to Stephan Ripka. With Stephan Ripka kick, the Rams led 7-0 with 8:46 left in the opening quarter.

After holding Bellefonte on its second possession, Penns Valley provided a substantial 12-play driving that concluded on a Seth Baney drive up the middle for the 2-yard touchdown run and later another Ripka kick, upping the lead to 14-0 with 0:48 left in the first.

Both teams’ defenses took charge of the second quarter as they bent but didn’t break. Both also came up with clutch interceptions, ending potential scoring drives.

As the two went into the intermission, the Rams held a 14-0 advantage.

Coming out of the half, Penns Valley got the kick off and immediately went to work on offense.

The Rams went mainly to its running game a quick pitches to drive down to the Red Raiders 32.

On the 11th play of the drive, Brinker found his favorite receiver Stephan Ripka once again on a 32-yard touchdown pass, extending the visitors lead to 21-0 with still 6:07 left in the third.

Bellefonte would save its best for last.

After a fourth quarter hook from Brinker to Ripka, upping the score to 28-0, Bellefonte went to its offense and new quarterback Houser.

The combination of Houser at quarterback and speedster Saunders, the offense drove down the field and set their sights on a touchdown.

On first down on the 21, Houser threw a dart to wide out Blandon Houser for the 21-yard TD reception. After a successful PAT, the Red Raiders made it 28-7.

The defense forced the Rams to punt on the following Penns Valley possession and the Red Raiders got the ball back at its own four.

The offensive line helped muscle their way downfield once again and Houser seemed very confident as they drove into the Rams territory.

Moving it’s way to the Penns Valley 13, Houser called his own number and cut the lead to 28-14 after blasting his way through the line and competing the touchdown drive.

However, it was too little, too late as the Rams were able to drain the clock and allowed just one play for Bellefonte before the final gun sounded.

In the end, the Rams picked up the Mountain League victory.
