Bellefonte stuns Rams to snap losing skid in girls soccer
BELLEFONTE — The wins have been tough to come by for the Bellefonte girls soccer team.
The Raiders snapped a four-game losing streak at Rogers Stadium, knocking off the Mountain League’s first-place team Penns Valley, 2-1, Wednesday night.
Bellefonte coach Stacey Miller believed that it was just a matter of time before the Raiders broke out.
“Of the six losses and one win prior to entering this game, four of those losses were by one goal,” Miller said. “We just seem to have been one goal, one error away from being in every one of those losses. It was great to see the girls’ hard work come together on the field tonight.”
Seniors Maddie Morelli and Leigha Schrader scored as Schrader had the game-winner.
“This was a tough one to take but ultimately we didn’t do enough to win. We lost our way a few times throughout tonight and went against the game plan but we were still able to create plenty of chances,” Penns Valley coach Andrew Beverly said. “If we were more clinical tonight then we could have scored six or seven goals, but we wasted our chances. Add into that a couple glaring mistakes in the back that gave Bellefonte a chance and credit to them cause they punished us.
“It’s a tough one tonight but we can’t dwell on it cause we’ve got more tough games ahead to finish out our league season.”
Penns Valley, which won the first meeting between the teams on Sept. 15, jumped out to an early lead. Katie Martell broke a scoreless tie with a goal 9 minutes, 34 seconds into the game. She scored past Bellefonte keeper Emily Culp. It would be the lone tally Culp allowed all night.
The Raiders went to the intermission down, 1-0. However, Bellefonte got the equalizer off the foot of Morelli just 5:12 into the second half. She took a beautiful pass from senior Mia Johnson and hooked it past Penns Valley keeper Kylie Auman to even things at 1-1.
The game was knotted at 1-1 until late in the second half when Schrader grabbed a loose ball and beat Auman at the 63:26 mark to make give the Lady Raiders a 2-1 lead that they would not relinquish. Culp was able to hold off Penns Valley down the stretch. She stopped 21 of 22 Penns Valley shots.
It was Bellefonte’s first win since Sept. 23, when they topped Philipsburg-Osceola, 4-2, at Rogers Stadium.
“It was a great team effort. It was nice to see the hard work of all the prior practices and games equate to success for them,” Miller said. “We are hoping this is the momentum we need to keep moving onward and upward the second half of the season.”
Bellefonte will look to keep its momentum going on Saturday, when it hosts rival Bald Eagle Area.
