Local roundup: PV girls, boys win in finales
Penns Valley edged Huntington, 2-1, in girls soccer. Huntingdon tied the game at 1-1 in the 74th minute. Katie Martell scored off an assist by Nikki Denger with just three minutes until the end of regulation.
Penns Valley’s first goal was thanks to an own goal.
“After a tough away game last night, our girls put in a strong performance against a tough Huntingdon squad. It took us a while to settle into the game, but a formation change helped us to gain some composure and start to create some chances,” Penns Valley coach Andrew Beverly said. “Huntingdon pulled one back but the girls responded well and Katie Martell popped up with the game-winner after some good work down our left-hand side.”
Kylie Auman had 10 saves for the Rams.
The win improves Penns Valley to 12-4 and 10-4 in the Mountain League. The Rams secured a District 6 playoff spot.
• In boys soccer, Penns Valley defeated Clearfield, 3-1, thanks to two late second-half goals from Michael Johnson.
Clearfield tied the game with a goal by Luke Winters in the 54th minute before Johnson scored consecutive goals.
“This team has worked extremely hard and I’m so proud of them. Our senior leadership (Zach Heckman, Caleb Narber, Michael Johnson, Connor Martz, Dristen Wolfe) has brought us to this point and I can’t wait to see them lead us into the playoffs next week,” Penns Valley coach Ken Gore said. “They have forged an epic season with diligence and discipline and they deserve this chance to play at least one more time.”
With the win, the Rams close the regular season with a 12-3 record.
