Shore goes 1-2 at MACC Quad

MONTGOMERY — It wasn’t easy for Crock Herman and the Jersey Shore wrestling team to get prepared so quickly for Saturday’s MACC Quad at Montgomery. After three weeks off, the Bulldogs were a little sluggish in the opener of a three-match day.

But even after a 1-2 performance, Herman left encouraged with how Jersey Shore performed.

“We had a lot of good things happen,” Herman said. “But we need to bring more intensity to the mat, more focus and more transitions from one move to another. But all of that is hard to work on when you’re back for five days and right into competition.”

Jersey Shore finished the day with a 42-30 win over Mifflinburg in a match which featured just three contested bouts, two of which the Bulldogs won. Shore dropped its opener to Montgomery, 44-18, and fell to Central Columbia in round 2, 36-24.

The opening-round loss to Montgomery found the Bulldogs shaking off some rust. But Herman said the way his team wrestled gradually improved from there. Liam Goodrich responded from a loss to the Red Raiders by posting a 9-2 win against Central Columbia. State-ranked Gabe Andrus followed up a loss to state-ranked Devon Deem of Montgomery by posting a 3-1 win over state-ranked Isaac Kester of Central. Hayden Packer bumped up a weight class against Central and scored a first-period fall against district qualifier Dylan Devlin.

The response to the early rust is what had Herman leaving the Montgomery Area Community Center satisfied with the Bulldogs’ performance. It was far from perfect, but it was something to build off of.

“I think they were all nervous coming off the break. We came out a little flat,” Herman said. “The intensity isn’t quite where we want it yet, especially with some of the veterans and some of our really good kids. But it is what it is, and we’ve only got a short time to prepare for the postseason.”

Jersey Shore freshman Brock Weiss posted three wins, including a pair of falls, at 106 pounds. Packer, a returning state qualifier, was also 3-0 with three falls.

Jersey Shore weighed in just nine wrestlers, eight of which wrestled. All eight recorded at least one win, and six had multiple wins.

“It was a tough week because some of our kids didn’t have time to drop, so they’re a weight higher than we wanted them,” Herman said. “It’s a hard transition, especially when they’re home for three-and-a-half weeks. It’s hard for them to maintain their weight. Some of them did it and some of them got a little high. We don’t want them to crash, so we weighed them in high and we’ll bring them down gradually.”
