CM baseball still in search of first home win after loss to Mifflinburg

MILL HALL – It was the combination of numerous walks surrendered and a trio of big innings offensively from Mifflinburg Wednesday that left Central Mountain still in search of its first home victory.

Collectively, Central Mountain managed to walk 11 batters as it fell, 11-7, to Mifflinburg to drop to 1-2 on the season.

Despite jumping out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning thanks to Aidan Major’s RBI single that brought in Peyton Johnson, Central Mountain’s offensive production came to a halt. It went three straight innings without registering a run or let alone mustering a hit.

The lack of success out of the Central Mountain lineup was in part due to the pitching performance out of Mifflinburg’s right-hander Allen Stamm who went five complete innings. Stamm tallied seven strikeouts and gave up three runs in his winning performance on the hill.

“I knew they were feisty. They’re a scrappy ball team, they’re well coached. He has a good, young group of kids there who know the game of baseball and play well,” Central Mountain coach Mike Kramer said. “We just came out and the energy level wasn’t there. We have to maintain the baseball mindset for seven innings of a baseball game so that we can consistently put the pedal down and score runs, throw strikes and play defense.”

All things considered; Central Mountain did leave the game with seven runs scored. It marked the Wildcats third straight game of recording seven or more runs. After notching the lone run in the game’s first inning, Central Mountain picked up two in the fifth and four in the seventh.

Mifflinburg held an 11-3 lead over the Central Mountain heading into the bottom of the seventh after a five-run top of the seventh.

Central Mountain made things semi-interesting in the final frame of the game when it scored four to cut the deficit in half. Peyton Johnson–who led the Wildcats in hits in the loss–earned one off his three doubles in the bottom of the seventh as he drove in a run to make it 11-6. Johnson later scored on a dropped third strike to make it 11-7. Back-to-back flyouts ended the game for Central Mountain.

Kramer was pleased with the fact his team showed fight up until the final out of the game.

“One of our principles is that we never want to quit. We showed that we didn’t have any quit in us there. We had some guys come off of the bench that put some bats on the ball and got a rally going. We’re putting runs up we just have to minimize their runs. As far as pitching staff we have the guys who can do it, we just need to mentally focus and get it done. Command on the mound is going to be our key for the next games.”

The Wildcats hit the road Friday to battle with Jersey Shore as they look to even their record at 2-2. Kramer said Friday’s game against the Bulldogs is another challenge ahead for his squad.

“It doesn’t get any easier on Friday, we just have to bounce back and play a seven-inning game,” Kramer said.
