Local roundup: Jersey Shore tennis earns its first victory of the season

Jersey Shore earned its first win of the season in boys tennis as the Bulldogs defeated Danville, 4-1. Jackson Stemler won at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 6-1. Eli Bower won at No. 2 singles, 7-6 (7-2), 6-0 and at No. 3 singles, Robert Smith picked up a 6-0, 6-0 victory.

A day after falling to Selinsgrove, 3-2, Central Mountain bounced back with a 5-0 shutout against Shikellamy. David Lindsay and Ethan Hall — Nos. 1 and 2 singles, respectively — both posted 6-0, 6-0 victories. Central Mountain’s Nate Brinker also won at No. 3 singles, 6-3, 6-1.

The win improves the Wildcats to 5-1 and CM hosts Williamsport on Thursday.

• In high school baseball, Brandon Laubach, Connor Griffin and Owen Anderson combined on a three-hitter and Jersey Shore started strong in a 7-4 season-opening win at Danville.

That trio of pitchers combined for 12 strikeouts with Laubach earning the win and Anderson the save. Jersey Shore built a 6-1 third-inning lead and Laubach, Anderson and Karter Peacock all had two hits. Laubach doubled twice, Anderson tripled and those two combined for four RBIs.

Noah Gearhart scored four times and Montgomery scored 11 runs in the second inning to break things open. Kevin Wetlauffer earned the win and combined with Colby Springman on a four-hitter. Springman added three runs scored.

Bald Eagle Area fell to Phillipsburg-Osceola, 6-0. Ryan Whitehead recorded the win for the Mounties behind 15 strikeouts. Noah Williamson suffered the loss for the Eagles despite not giving up any earned runs.

Bobby Marsh had a solid day at the plate for Bellefonte, as he recorded four RBIs in the Raiders’ 12-4 victory against Huntingdon. Marsh went 2 for 4 at the plate with a homerun in the win. Outside of Marsh, Bellefonte got production out of Derek Fravel, Zach Swanger, Seth Shuey, Trevor Johnson and Max Rogers who all recorded hits in the win. Derek Fravel and Gavin Fravel were on the mound for Bellefonte.

• The Bellefonte softball team managed to defeat Penns Valley, 11-0 in shutout fashion Monday. Lexi Rogers got the win in the circle for the Raiders as she struck out 11 in five innings of work.

Hanna Lauck recorded three hits and two RBIs for the Raiders, Sara DeHaas homered and earned a triple and Lilly Gardner tallied two hits of her own.

• In college softball, Warrior Run grad Madison Waltman struck out 10 to lift Lock Haven to a 4-3 win in game two of a doubleheader against Millersville. The Marauders won game one, 3-1.

Riley McClellan had a triple and home run while going 2 for 3 in the second game to help the Bald Eagles (4-12, 4-12 PSAC East).

• The Lock Haven University tennis team opened the season at Kutztown and fell, 7-0.

Playing No. 1 doubles, Maddy Reeves and Central Mountain grad Natalie Brown fell to Kutztown’s Claudia Makarski and Catherine Maher 3-6 in a hard fought match.
