Local roundup: LHU’s Mellott earns PSAC award
Kyler Mellott of the Lock Haven University baseball team was named this week’s PSAC Eastern Division Pitcher of the Week for his efforts over the weekend against Mansfield.
Mellott, a Bellefonte graduate, threw a complete-game shutout to power the Bald Eagles to a 7-0 victory Saturday.
Over seven-innings of shutout work, Mellott struck out five, while scattering four hits. He didn’t surrender a walk and forced six ground outs in the dominating effort.
• Distance-standout Laurel Moyer, a Central Mountain graduate, smashed her own school record in the 5,000-meter run and led the way for the Lock Haven University women’s outdoor track and field team at the Ed Fry Invitational on Sunday.
Competing at 5,000-meters, Moyer shattered her own school record with an NCAA Division II championship provisional qualifying time of 16:55.83. She became the first woman in LHU history to break the 17-minute mark in the 5K and in doing so, Moyer broke her own school record of 17:01.05, which she ran back in 2019 at the Penn Relays.
• Central Mountain’s David Lindsay earned a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles against Hollidaysburg’s Nathan Barton, but the Wildcats fell, 4-1.
Ethan Hall lost at No. 2 singles, 6-0, 6-2, to Brian Johnson and the Wildcats’ doubles team of Leisher Gugino and Asher Talbot fell at No. 1 doubles, 6-1, 6-2, to Haddy Obeid and Ben Johnson.
The Wildcats (5-3) host a quad meet today at 11 a.m. against Altoona, Mifflin County and Tyrone.
