Eagles defeat Rams in baseball
SPRING MILLS – There was no rust shown after a week off by the Bald Eagle baseball team Tuesday as they found themselves in a typical Mountain League battle as it traveled to Penns Valley.
On the mound for the Eagles was Dylan Barnyack while the Rams countered with Mason Lieb.
Both controlled the tempo of the game as the two sizzled for most of the contest.
In the end, it would be Barnyack who would get the win as he went the distance allowing two runs off four hits while striking out six strike outs in the game.
Lieb was just as effective as he went six and a 1/3 innings, striking out nine, before being taken out and replaced by Colby Sweitzer.
“I was very pleased with the effort. I was a little worried coming into the game tonight because we haven’t played in a week and Lieb is a good pitcher and we haven’t seen live pitching in a week. That’s a concern right there. We gutted out some runs and we had to work through some bad hops in the infield,” Bald Eagle coach Jim Gardner. “We were able to fight through that and that says a lot about our kids. I am very very confident in our defense and Barnyack out there pitching, he puts the ball around the plate and lets our defense work.”
Myles Stover scored three times and picked up a hit in the victory while teammates McGwire Heverly, Hayden Vaughn, Kyler Cunningham and Alex Gavlock all finished with one hit each.
For Penns Valley, Dakota Brodzina led the team with a 2 for 2 night at the plate.
Others making their mark were Ty Houtz (run scored), Miles Brooks (run scored) and Lieb (RBI)
Bald Eagle picked up the game’s first hit in the top of the second.
Hayden Vaughn got one out of the infield and was able to work his way around the bases, landing on third.
But Vaughn was stranded after the Rams defense was able to clamp down and keep the game scoreless.
The Eagles scored in the top of the third.
Stover reached on a Ram miscue and later moved to third on a sacrifice fly by Noah Williamson.
A double later by Cunningham, Stover crossed the plate making it 1-0.
In the bottom of the inning, Brodzina broke up Barnyack’s no-hitter when he sent a sizzling liner just over the shortstop.
But two fly outs later, he would be stranded at first.
Going into the fifth the Eagles scored again, this time picking up two runs.
