It seems that whatever event Camryn Bair competes in, she ends up winning. When you’re one of District 6’s best swimmers in Class AAA and you break pool records almost as frequently as Sabrina Carpenter drops a top 40 hit, it comes somewhat naturally.
Tuesday was no exception either.
On Tuesday at Williamsport’s natatorium, Central Mountain senior Camryn Bair not only won two individual events, but dominated in them in a meet with Williamsport, Mifflinburg and Wellsboro.
Bair’s performance helped the Central Mountain girls team beat Wellsboro (128-26) and Mifflinburg (137-0) and fell to Williamsport (106-74).
“I feel the girls side, we come out and competed as best we could. We had a couple girls out today, so we kind of hand to scramble at the last minute and get the girls lineup set a little different than we had,” Central Mountain coach Scott Bair said. “We gave it everything we had. We had a lot of good wins and lot of good races. I’m very proud of the girls.”

The Central Mountain boys edged out Williamsport, 89-79, and beat Wellsboro (131-27) and Mifflinburg (132-12).’
“The boys came out, I put a challenge up for our guys. I knew it would be a tight meet all the way until the end,” Bair said. “We were up by two going into the last relay, I think we sealed it there with the last relay. Lot of good swims by the boys. We had a couple make district times today, so I’m real proud of everybody here today.”
In the girls 200 free, Bair started out strong with a significant lead over her competition after the first 25 yards. By the second lap, she had already gained a four-second lead. By the third lap? She was in complete control.
No swimmer challenged Bair in the race as she swam a time of 2:02.18, winning by eight seconds over Wellsboro’s Piper Anderegg.
In the 100 fly, it was a similar situation. Bair got off to another strong start and didn’t let Williamsport’s Kiley Persun gain distance down the stretch as Bair won in 1:02.59 and beat out Persun by 11 seconds in the race.

While Bair dominated, she admitted they weren’t her favorite races to swim. And typically, she doesn’t swim in them usually to begin with.
“I think I just try to be good at everything. They’re not my favorite events to swim, but I just went out there, swam strong and just gave it all I had,” Camryn Bair said.
Bair was part of Central Mountain’s 200 medley relay team as well which won with a time of 2:03.00 with Abrianna Hosley, Bair, Gabriella Hosley and Anna Stahl. Bair also helped that same foursome win the 200 free relay race in 1:49.31. The Wildcats secured the win after Williamsport’s team was disqualified for an early jump.
“We swam both the 200 free and 200 medley, I think our relays this year are pretty good,” Camryn Bair said. “We all have a good group of girls that can swim everything and yeah, I think we just went out there and raced and gave it everything we had.”
Bair was one of many Central Mountain swimmers who saw success in the pool.

In the 200 IM, Gabriella Hosley won in 2:24.08, beating out Persun by roughly eight seconds. Gabriella Hosley’s best performance, however, came in the girls 100 breast. It was there where she was challenged the entire race by Hughesville’s Ashlynn Barlett. Gabriella Hosley would end up beating out Barlett in the narrowest of margins by just 0.01 seconds with a time of 1:15.85 to Barlett’s 1:15.86. Barlett, competing as an independent, didn’t take second as independent swimmers’ times are used for district qualifying standards and not place finishes during the regular season.
“I think we have a really strong group this year, we definitely have the numbers and everybody’s working hard,” Camryn Bair said of the team’s overall performance. “I think we knew that Williamsport was going to put up a good fight, so we just came out here and gave it all we had.”
In the 500 free, Central Mountain’s Abrianna Hosley had a strong performance as she finished in 5:48.91, winning by nine seconds over Wellsboro’s Piper Anderegg, who took second in 5:57.29. Hosley kept up a solid pace throughout the race to claim the victory. Abrianna Hosley would also take a second-place finish in the 100 back later in the evening when she swam a 1:10.39, behind only Williamsport standout Kendall Cohick’s 1:04.82.
“The Hosley sisters, I could put them in any event that we need and they would step up. Abrianna every meet I got to put her into the 200 free relay, the 500 and the 100 back, boom boom boom and she always comes through for me,” coach Scott Bair said. “We have a lot of kids that are versatile and I kind of gave the rest of the girls team a challenge this year that they all need to become more versatile because some of these kids are graduating at the end of the year.”
Williamsport coach Brett Johnson knew how tough Central Mountain’s swimming teams were going into Tuesday’s meet as well.

“I knew the boys had numbers on us and I knew it was going to be tough there. They’ve got some good swimmers as well. The girls, I know who they have and have seen them in the past. You have to strategize to get them. They’ve got a really good swimmer with Cam (Bair) and pretty much anything she’s in she’s going to win,” Johnson said. “So you have to go around there and try to pick what she’s going to do and put people around her.
“That’s not to take away from their other swimmers with the 500 freestyler (Abrianna Hosley) who’s really good, the Hosley sisters are both good,” Johnson added. “You have to really figure out where we’re going to get the points around them. It’s hard, they’re a good team.”
On the boys side, Central Mountain had a number of top-3 finishers.
Jonathan Hughes won the 200 IM in 2:04.89 as he beat Williamsport standout Keller Griswold, who took second place in 2:06.69. Central Mountain’s Raiden Newcomer also won, claiming a victory in the 50 free in 25.45, winning an unbelievably close race by just 0.05 seconds over Williamsport’s Nathaniel DePrenda. Bryce Warren took third in the race for the Wildcats in 25.59 as it was a tight finish amongst the top 3.
In the 100 fly, the Wildcats had a pair of top-3 finishers with Cory Matejovich taking second in 1:06.16 and Brody Rhine finishing third in 1:09.65. Williamsport’s Griswold won in 56.14, the only swimmer to break a minute in the race.
In the boys 500 free, Central Mountain’s Rhys Swift claimed a third-place finish with a time of 5:52.11 as he trailed only Williamsport’s Nathaniel DePrenda (5:32.73) and Wellsboro’s Matthew Robbins (5:34.77).
In boys relay competition, the Wildcats saw Owen Wunder, Brody Rhine, Che McAllister and Carter Perry take second in 1:47.40. That foursome was behind only Williamsport’s winning squad of Cooper Allmaras, Brady Ross, Evan Summers and Keller Griswold (1:40.58).
Central Mountain’s girls 400 free relay team of Kaylie McCloskey, Sloane Coakley, Erin Packer and Lily McWilliams finished in 4:26,.64 to claim a third-place finish in the race.
