Local roundup: Jersey Shore girls fall to Shikellamy by 4 points
Cailyn Schall and Sophia Stover each scored nine points but Shikellamy rallied in the fourth quarter and defeated Jersey Shore, 44-40. The Braves tied Jersey Shore (14-4, 7-2) for first in the HAC-I and both teams have one league game remaining. Jersey Shore can win at least a share of its third straight crown if it wins its finale at Midd-West and Shikellamy heads to Central Mountain.
Central Mountain fell to Selinsgrove, 51-25. The loss drops the Wildcats to 8-8.
• Matthew Muthler broke the Lock Haven men’s track and field program record in the Heptathlon to headline a standout day for the Bald Eagles at the two-day Bison Open & Multi, hosted by Bucknell University on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 31-Feb. 1.
Muthler scored 4975 points to break a 14-year program record in the heptathlon for the Bald Eagles. Muthler sealed the record and event victory by running a 2:36.24, which broke a Bucknell facility record by eight seconds. Muthler’s score is a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference and NCAA provisional mark, ranking in the top-20 in the country.
Muthler’s hep high jump of 6-5 is also a PSAC qualifier and is ranked No. 14 all-time in program history.
On the women’s side, Samantha Trench, on the first day, ran a personal best and third all-time 9.17 (PSAC) in the 60-meter hurdle, earning her second place.
The duo of Gwen Lloyd and Claire Hauser raced the mile, placing fourth and fifth, respectively. Lloyd ran a season-best time of 5:24.04 and Hauser had a personal-best time of 5:25.09
Aubrey Sechrist and Nicole Carroll were a dynamic one-two punch in the 1000-meter run and finished in first and second place, respectively. Sechrist ran a 3:07.21 and Carroll ran a time of 3:07.40. Both Sechrist and Carroll are now featured in the program’s top-10 1000-meter runs.
