Wildcats see success all over in Week 9

Week 9 of the Central Mountain winter sports season had a lot of highs and lows. Here’s a breakdown of each team’s performance.

The Central Mountain girls basketball team had a standout performance on Wednesday, posting their highest point total of the season with 81 points in a dominating win against Midd-West. However, Saturday’s game against Selinsgrove was a tough one, as they struggled offensively and were defeated 51-28.

Coach Scott Baker noted the inconsistency and emphasized the need to improve defense and reduce turnovers heading into the final stretch of the season.

The boys basketball team had a competitive week, losing a close game to Tyrone by three points, but bouncing back with a 28-point win over Midd-West. Unfortunately they ended the week with a 12-point loss, leaving them with a 7-12 record.

Coach Tyler Bardo highlighted the team’s strong competitive spirit but stressed the need for better attention to detail to close out games.

The Central Mountain boys swim team delivered a dominant performance against Mount Carmel by winning 116-47. They won all three relays and several individual events, with notable performances from Rhys Swift, Raiden Newcomer, Brody Rhine, Jonathan Hughes, and Neil Kaluzny. The girls swim team also had a dominant win over Mount Carmel, 132-27, and made history with Camryn Bair breaking the 500 free school record. They swept all 11 events, with standout performances from Gabriella Hosley, Benelli Reynolds, Kaylie McCloskey, and others.

The boys and girls record improved to 11-1, and they will face Williamsport in their final dual meet of the season today.

The boys wrestling team had a busy and successful week, winning the District 6 Class AAA Duals title. They secured a thrilling victory over State College in the semi-finals, winning eight out of 10 bouts, and then followed it up with an exciting win against Altoona to claim the District 6 title.

A crucial fall by freshman Todd Caris in the final bout helped seal the victory. The Wildcats now move on to the PIAA team tournament where they will face Shikellamy in the first round in Mill Hall tonight.

In girls wrestling, Central Mountain saw success in the Williamsport Showcase Tournament over the weekend. Central Mountain’ Austynn Falls won the title at 142 pounds and at 170, Kendall Wagner pinned Mifflinburg’s Laurel Ramsey to take the title.

Team of the Week

The boys wrestling team earned Team of the Week honors for their third straight District 6 Class AAA Duals title. Their perseverance and strong performance were key to their success, and they’ll be looking to carry that momentum into the state tournament.

Athlete of the Week

Bryce Brungard, a senior at 189 pound, had contributions which were pivotal in both of the team’s dual wins. Despite wrestling up two weight classes against State College and Altoona, Brungard delivered key victories, including an overtime win against State College and another crucial win against Altoona.

His selflessness and commitment to the team earned him this honor.

It’s been an exciting week for Central Mountain, and as the winter season nears its end, there’s plenty to look forward to.
