Central Mountain’s Camryn Bair heads to fourth state meet; looks to earn medal

Bair is competing in two events at the PIAA Class AAA swimming and diving championships, which begins Friday for Class AAA. The West Virginia recruit will swim in the 50 free and 100 breast events.

Central Mountain senior Camryn Bair holds numerous records in Mill Hall. She’s without question one of the program’s greatest swimmers to ever wear a swimsuit and she’s accomplished a lot in her four years at Central Mountain.

She holds the school records in the 50 free, 100 free, 100 breast, 100 back, 200 IM, 500 free and is part of two record-breaking relay teams (200 free relay, 400 free relay). Bair has a chance to add to that legacy at Bucknell as part of the PIAA Class AAA swimming and diving championships. Class AAA competition is Friday and Saturday.

Bair is state-bound in two events this year in both the 50 free and 100 breast and the senior is hoping to go out with a bang in her final year of varsity competition.

“Her goals are to swim some new PR’s and bring home some hardware at states. She has been shy of the podium by 1-2 spots the last two years,” Central Mountain coach Scott Bair said. “Hopefully, this year is the year she can achieve that goal that she has dreamed about.”

Last year Bair finished 10th in the 50 free, her highest finish of her career, but just missed the podium. It was the second-highest finish for a Central Mountain swimmer (Nate DeCapria, seventh in 100 back, 2001). Prior to becoming Central Mountain, only two swimmers at Lock Haven High School ever reached the podium at the state meet.

Mike Connor took fifth in the 100 breast in 1975 and second in 1976 and in 1990, Brian Foley was a fifth-place finisher in the 100 back.

A medal by Bair would make history, as no Mill Hall native has ever placed on the podium in girls swimming history, be it Central Mountain or Lock Haven High School.

This is the fourth consecutive season that Bair has found herself compete at Bucknell with the state’s best swimmers. That continued success is something that younger swimmers at Central Mountain, and even those who will be coming up from middle school the next few years, can look up to. The West Virginia commit is a role model for a lot of those swimmers in Mill Hall with her success.

“Camryn has been a huge asset to the growth of the Central Mountain program. She constantly sets high goals and expectations for herself. She has set the bar pretty high for all future Wildcat swimmers as she holds eight school records (six individual and two relays),” coach Bair said. “She has been a good role model for her peers in and out of the pool. She has demonstrated that to be good at your craft, you have to be willing to be committed at getting better, sacrifice many things in order to make swimming a priority, work hard when nobody’s looking, learn from every win/loss, and always remember to have fun.”

The West Virginia recruit is Central Mountain’s lone qualifier at the state meet this year. Last year, she was joined by teammate Jonathan Hughes at Bucknell.

Bair is in the fourth of four prelims in the girls Class AAA 50 free race with a time of 24.32. She’s roughly a second from the best time in the field with Mount Lebanon’s Slyvia Roy (22.57). Bair has a solid chance to reach the A finals with a great swim in the prelims.

In the girls 100 breast competition, Bair is seeded in the third of four prelims after she swam a 1:04.86 at the District 6 Class AAA championships two weeks ago. The top time in the field is by Pine Richland’s Sara Shaffer (1:02.11) and Fox Chapel Area’s Sarah Pasquella (1:02.15).

Bair continues to push herself in races and always swims well, so having outstanding competition at the state meet will onnly help Bair swim her best and drive her in the pool.

“I think I just try to be good at everything,” Bair said during a dual against Williamsport earlier this season. “I just went out there, swam strong and just gave it all I had.”

That’s the type of attitude and mindset that has Bair as a multi-time record holder with the Wildcats program and has pushed her to be an outstanding swimmer in every event she swims in.

“As her coach and dad, I love watching her swim whether it is a dual meet or a championship meet. I am in awe of what she has been able to accomplish in her high school career,” coach Bair said. “At the state meet, I hope she has great swims and is able to accomplish her ultimate goal of standing on the podium with a state medal.”
