LHU men’s wrestling claims MAC championships as four head to nationals

TRENTON, N.J. — The final day featured a two-team race to be named the 2025 Mid-American Conference Champion and the Lock Haven men’s wrestling team prevailed to bring home its third team title in four seasons.

Anthony Noto, Wyatt Henson and Montoursville graduate Gavin Hoffman brought home individual titles and a total of four wrestlers punched their tickets to the 2025 NCAA Division I National Championships in Philadelphia on March 20-22.

The Bald Eagles won their third team title in four years, dating back to the 2022 season. Lock Haven entered championship Saturday trailing Central Michigan 98-85 in team points, but had a monster final day that featured three individual champions, four national qualifiers and podium finishes at eight of 10 weights.

Lock Haven dominated the afternoon and was the only school to score over 120 points as they finished with 121.5 team points. Central Michigan (113) finished second and Edinboro took third (97.5).

No. 1 seeds Noto (133) and Henson (141) and No. 2 seed Hoffman (285) soared to individual championships at their respective weight classes with a combined 11-0 record. Avery Bassett will join the trio of champions at the NCAA DI Wrestling Championships after punching his ticket to Philadelphia with a third-place finish at 174 pounds.

The top seed at 133 pounds, Noto soared to his fourth straight MAC individual title with a perfect 3-0 record, including one tech fall and one major decision. Noto became the Bald Eagles’ first four-time MAC Champion after defeating No. 2 seed Sean Spidle (Central Michigan), 5-1, in the 133 championship. Noto is also the 10th ever four-time MAC Champion.

Earning his second straight MAC Championship at 141 pounds, Henson went 4-0 on the weekend with three tech falls, including a convincing 23-3 (7:00) tech in the championship bout over the No. 2 seed from Central Michigan Andrew Austin.

Hoffman, ranked second at heavy weight, went 4-0 in the tournament and 2-0 on Saturday to claim the 285 title. Hoffman upset the No. 1 seed Jordan Greer (Ohio) with an 8-3 decision in the title match.

Tucker Hogan capped the quartet of Bald Eagle finalists at 197 pounds, where he went 2-0 to earn a spot in the title match, but fell in a narrow 7-4 decision to No. 3 seed Brock Zurawski (Rider).

Bassett fought his way through the consolation bracket and went 3-0 on Saturday, which he capped off by defeating the No. 6 seed Michael Wilson (Rider) with a 10-4 decision to earn third place and secure a spot at Nationals.

At 165, Caden Dobbins earned an important third-place finish, which proved crucial to the Bald Eagles’ team title. Dobbins, the No. 7 seed at 165, went 3-0 to kick off Saturday to secure third and earned a chance at a true-second match, which he fell narrowly in a 2-0 decision to Central Michigan’s Chandler Amaker.

Bassett and Dobbins finished with a team-high five individual victories in the tournament.

Collin Fegley earned a fourth-place finish at 184 with a pair of consolation wins on Saturday, including an exciting sudden death victory over No. 4 seed Marcus Petite (Buffalo).
