CM’s Wible wins 400, Winner places in steeplechase at Lock Haven HS Classic

TIM WEIGHT/For The Express Central Mountain's Damien Winner competes on Saturday in the 2,000 steeplechase at the Lock Haven High School Classic.

LOCK HAVEN — Central Mountain’s Sam Wible was a little bit tired when he lined up to run the 400 from earlier in the day on Saturday he noted. But the Wildcat was focused on running a solid time and winning the event.

On a chilly and windy Saturday afternoon at the Lock Haven High School Classic, Wible did exactly that.

The Wildcat broke the 50-second mark in the event to set a PR and won the 400 with a time of 49.92.

“I PR’d so I’m really excited to break that 50 mark and keep going down,” Wible said. “It’s not a bad day at all, hopefully I can do that again in 4 by 4, but overall a great day and I’m really glad with what I’ve done.”

Wible ran a close race as he just beat out Williamsport sophomore Brayden Ungard by 0.11 seconds. The Millionaires’ Tevin Williams took third in 50.13.

“I knew the guy down in Lanes 3, 4, 5, they were all really fast and I knew they were going to be coming,” Wible said. “Once I started hearing them and saw them to my side, I just gave everything I had and I came across the finish line and beat them by a little beat. It really motivates me to go quicker.”

Wible noted that he usually wants to get out to a great start and on Saturday, he did exactly that.

“I got out as hard as I could. I think that’s what made it a lot better time,” Wible said. “With like 150 to go, it’s just a mental game. I’m already very tired and I just kind of use my arms to open up as much as I can.”

Wible was the lone Central Mountain athlete to claim a victory on Saturday, but the Wildcats saw a number of top 3 finishers.

Central Mountain junior Damien Winner took third in the 2,000 steeplechase with a time of 6:36.40. He was only two seconds behind State College’s Avery Selber (6:34.99) and Lewisburg’s Grayson Barner (6:34.99).

“What I do is I think about what it means to me for it and my goals for it to really push myself to be better and improve on myself to be the best I can be,” Winner said with his third-place medal around his neck for the 2,000 steeplechase. “At the start, I did get behind everybody but as we got to the 300, I started to speed it up and go around to be my best.”

While the steeplechase is an event not many get to run — few tracks have a pit, and it’s only seen at a handful of invitationals — it’s an event Winner enjoys being able to run in.

“It’s a shame that in our district we don’t have the steeplechase at districts, but it’s an honor to be able to come here and run in the event,” Winner said. “I wanted to better my time and just do my very best. I wanted to push myself.”

Central Mountain saw Macia Owens take third in the 100 hurdles in 16.51 and Jocelyn Wiseman was fourth in 16.65.

Bald Eagle Area standout Sybil Thompson, a senior, took third in the 2,000 steeplechase with a time of 8:44.00. The only runners ahead of her were Lacey Shaeffer of State College (8:03.16) and Emerson Snare of Altoona (8:17.72).

“I did pretty well, I felt pretty conditioned. I haven’t run a mile yet this year, so I was kind of nervous coming into it, but I thought I did pretty good with the weather conditions,” Thompson said. “We did a lot of hurdle work at practice this week (to prepare) and running miles, running 2,000 meters instead of the 800 or 1,600.”

Thompson noted that having talented runners in the event helped push her.

“The girls in front of me definitely make me work hard, especially when they’re from State College because we’re from a small school,” Thompson said. “Running against them is nice with good competition. It definitely works me harder.”

Thompson ran the event last year and noted that it’s one of her favorite events to do when she gets the opportunity.

“I like to push myself to work harder in an event that I don’t do often,” Thompson said.

TIM WEIGHT/For The Express Bellefonte's Victoria Schellenberg watches video with her coach during the pole vault competition.

Bald Eagle Area’s Rebekah Guenot was fourth with a time of 8:51.88.

The Eagles saw Beau Taylor finish third in the 300 hurdles with a time of 41.46.

Thompson noted that coming from a smaller school like Bald Eagle Area, she’s glad she can represent the school at invitationals against perennially strong larger programs like State College and Altoona.

“I like to come down here and show that we can definitely work harder,” Thompson said.

Bellefonte’s Victoria Schellenberg, a returning District 6 Class AAA qualifier last spring, took second in the pole vault competition with a height of 10 feet, 6 inches. She was behind only Montoursville’s Kendall Simms (11-6).

TIM WEIGHT/For The Express Central Mountain's Camryn Bair competes during Saturday's Lock Haven High School Classic.

Bellefonte’s Althea Helms was a third-place finisher in the long jump with a distance of 17-2 3/4, trailing State College’s Sanai Abdullah (18-10 3/4) and Altoona’s Jill Long (17-4 3/4). Helms also took third in the 400 in 58.54 in a race which saw the top four finishers all within a second of one another. She trailed only Williamsport’s Geiani Whaley (58.05) and Warrior Run’s Natalie Hall (58.48).

Jersey Shore’s Aaralynn Kimble was a fourth-place finisher in the 400 with a time of 58.98.
