Jersey Shore junior softball opens states with dominant win

TURBOTVILLE – Jersey Shore won its first game at the state junior softball tournament Wednesday at the Moser Complex, 12-2, in five innings over Radnor-Wayne.

Amelia Thomas celebrated her 15th birthday with a double, triple, three runs scored, and pitched the first three innings. Annabelle Fry relieved with two perfect innings, as well as going 2-for-3 with three RBIs.

Up next, the Shore juniors will take on Indiana at 3 on Thursday in the winner’s bracket final.

Wednesday marked Shore’s sixth postseason game since districts, but it was the first where it never trailed. That came thanks to a five-run first inning highlighted by a two-RBI triple from Payton Pennycoff. Pennycoff and Caitlyn McDermott also scored in the first.

Shore scored in every inning as McDermott and Layla Hornberger scored twice, and Allie Cimini, Haley Kitner, and Lucy Brigandi scored once. McDermott scored on a wild pitch to end the game in the fifth.

Izzy Chang led Radnor-Wayne with a double. Radnor-Wayne reached Wednesday’s game by beating Caln Township of Chester County in the opener Wednesday.

Indiana advanced by beating DuBois on Wednesday, 11-0. Caln Township and DuBois played later on Wednesday in a playback elimination game, with that winner set to take on Radnor-Wayne on Thursday.DuBois won 18-5 to keep its run alive.

The tournament has two games scheduled for Friday and a title game, if necessary, on Saturday.
