Our View: Student loan forgiveness can take work incentive away

There are several problems with President Joe Biden’s proposal to cancel portions of student loan debt. First, the plan is an executive action. With so many people having to pay their student loans, a measure this contentious should go through proper, transparent debate of our U.S. House and Senate. It should have to win majorities of our directly-elected lawmakers. If it were to go through the correct process of transparency and compromise perhaps some of the other problems could be corrected or at least mitigated. As we said at the beginning, you can call Lock Haven “Music Haven.” The sponsoring body — the City of Lock Haven — along with Clinton County, the Clinton County Community Foundation, media sponsors, an anonymous sponsor and the many sponsoring businesses should be proud of the series as it entertains thousands each year — all for free! This fall, during the legislative campaign season, many Pennsylvania state lawmakers will jump aboard the opportunity to boast about having voted to toughen penalties for repeat drunken drivers. To a small degree, they are justified in seizing upon that opportunity. The action was an overdue step forward in regard to making the state’s roadways safer. Beginning in November, according to the Associated Press, some offenders convicted of a third or subsequent DUI violation will be subject to stiffer sentences. That word “some” is troubling. The correct word should be ...
