Don’t create a different March madness

If you’re a sports fan in general, or a basketball fan in particular, then this week is probably something you’ve looked forward to — the beginning of the NCAA basketball tournaments, often referred to as “March Madness” because of the at-times unpredictable nature of the intense competition. And while March Madness is nothing new, the meteoric rise of legalized sports gambling is — at least relatively speaking. According to an Associated Press story, it is estimated that 17% of American adults (not just sports fans, but all adults) will place a bet of some kind on the ...

We must make Progress

We think all Americans can feel the gravity of what’s happening in Ukraine and take Russia’s attack on freedom very seriously. It is threatening to our very way of life. It is serious enough that we cannot sit idly by. We need to fight in different ways for freedom and Democracy at home. One way we do that is certainly to strengthen our way of life in our communities, to affirm our institutions of freedom and private enterprise. You see, “state-owned” is behind all of what Russia and China do. Their governments control what people are told, what people and private ...

Oppose Raskin’s nomination to Federal Reserve

It’s hard to deny the effort underway in Washington, D.C., to change America’s role as a global energy giant. This effort has taken many forms. The latest push by some Democrats is to coerce banks to pull back funding to fossil-fuel companies through a process termed “de-banking.” One proponent of de-banking is Sarah Bloom Raskin. She is President Joe Biden’s pick to serve as vice chair of the Federal Reserve Board, a position that would give her authority over the nation’s banks. Raskin has a record of opposition to fossil-fuel companies. In a May 2020 commentary in ...

Imagine …

You wake up in the morning, put on the coffee, dress for work or just mozy on into the day while deciding what to do and where to go. It’s like most other days here in America. But imagine awakening — if you even slept — to tanks and missiles and bombing all around you or approaching you. To the prospect that you, your loved ones and friends may die. That your beloved community and country could be wiped out. That’s the case for our friends in Ukraine. Their very lives are at stake. The freedom that Russia and its Communist leaders despise is about to be taken away ...

Teacher shortage is alarming

s the 1960s ended, Pennsylvania teachers still were providing dedicated service to their school districts and students, despite embarrassingly low wages, paltry fringe benefits and, in some cases, not commanding the respect and parental support they deserved. That unfortunate scenario began to change in 1970, due to the Legislature’s passage of Act 195, the Public Employee Relations Act, which paved the way for collective bargaining — contract negotiations — that over the years produced increasingly higher pay, better insurance coverage, better retirement benefits and other ...

People not wearing masks forced LHU’s restrictions

It’s a real shame that so many people can now not attend an indoor winter sports competition at Lock Haven University because so many people have ignored the school’s policy on wearing masks to protect themselves and others, including our student-athletes. The announcement that attendance at all home athletic competitions will be restricted to participating student-athletes, coaches, officials, athletic administration and the essential personnel required to host the event is very unfortunate, but not a surprise. No tickets will be sold, leaving season-ticket holders and other ...
