One group of 6th grade students in each of Mrs. Anderson’s blocks 1,2, and 4 at Central Mountain Middle School were asked to build their own city. Students were given this assignment for several reasons. One reason was to understand population density and population distribution. Another reason was to understand the push and pull factors of the places that people live. Finally, Mrs. Anderson wanted her students to learn what is needed to sustain a growing population and to understand what rural, suburban and urban areas are. The students needed to plan out what their city would look like. They also needed to figure out what was needed in order to sustain their city’s growing population, plan out what they needed to build their city, they needed to know how big their cities would be.
