E-Hallpass

Central Mountain Middle School students use an online hall pass system called E-Hallpass. The school began using this system at the end of last school year and used it for this entire school year. Students and staff have differing opinions on this type of hall pass system.

One opinion is that E-Hallpass is good and beneficial to the school. This opinion is most common among teachers, whereas students have a more extreme opinion on the subject. Out of all of the teachers we interviewed, all of them agreed that E-Hallpass is better than the common paper hallpass and sign-out sheet. Sixth grade teacher Tim Gill likes that E-Hallpass shows exactly who is out and how long they have been out. Some of them said they wouldn’t change anything. Others had a differing opinion. Teacher Christina Onuskanich says, “I wish everything was an autopass.” Autopass is exactly what it sounds like; it lets each student start and stop their pass. This makes it easy for teachers when they are in the middle of a lesson and someone needs to go somewhere. Other teachers don’t like autopass for this same reason.

The other, opposing opinion, is that E-Hallpass is upsetting and not very good. This opinion is most common among students. One group of students was particularly outspoken about this topic. CMMS students Kadence Hall and Ray Hefferon strongly agree on the fact that E-Hallpass quote “makes me want to cry!” Other students were less outspoken and simply said that they disliked E-Hallpass. Some of them even said that even though they didn’t like E-Hallpass, they preferred it over traditional hallpasses. On the other hand, some of the students said they did. CMMS student Jocelyn Askey prefers E-Hallpass in comparison to a sign out sheet or other hallpass methods.

All of the teachers and students said that E-Hallpass glitches. Teacher Tim Gill feels frustrated when E-Hallpass glitches. Students and teachers alike wish that E-Hallpass wouldn’t glitch.
