Downtown Rotary welcomes student winners

LOCK HAVEN -- Rotarians in the Downtown Lock Haven club were happy to meet two of their student award winners, Rebecca Muthler and Julia Schubach, at the club meeting Tuesday, June 13.

The club recently gave a total of $2,100 in awards to Central Mountain High School graduating seniors.

Rebecca received the club's new Eleanor Kodish Memorial Scholarship supporting future teachers, which was $500 this year. Rebecca plans to teach history to secondary students and is enrolled at Lock Haven University starting this fall. She has a particular interest in World War II and hopes to participate in a study abroad program in Germany.

In high school she earned membership in the National Honor Society and the German Honor Society, participated in chorus and the reading competition club, and competed in culinary arts with SkillsUSA.

Julia received the scholarship in memory of Dr. Betty Baird Schantz, which was $600 this year. This award goes to a member of Interact, the Rotary organization for high school students.

Julia was valedictorian of the class. She was an Interactor for four years and held an office in the chapter for two years. A member of the National Honor Society, she also participated on the track team.

A future veterinarian, she will study at Penn State with a double major in biostatistics and animal science.

She has also raised two service dogs.

The club's third award winner, Olivia Rockey, was not able to attend the meeting. She received the Roberta Way Memorial Scholarship of $1,000.

A member of Interact for three years, Olivia also has volunteered with More Than Bread, Salvation Army, Sleep in Heavenly Peace, the Tri-County Triathlon and at the Lock Haven Rehabilitation Center.

She plans to study at Juniata College to become a school psychologist.
