BEECH CREEK -- Each year the Beech Creek American Legion Auxiliary sponsors an essay writing contest for third and fourth graders at Liberty Curtin Elementary in Blanchard.
The auxiliary then hosts a pizza party to recognize those students who competed in the contest and to announce the winners.
The pizza party was attended by the students who wrote essays, their family members, their fourth grade teachers, Dr. Lana Weaver and Mrs. Prella Smith, and auxiliary representatives.
Representing the Legion Auxiliary, Peggy Tressler, introduced the students and presented each with a certificate and cash award. The students read their essays to those in attendance.
This year's essay theme was "What does America the Beautiful mean to me (regarding veterans and our military)?"
Students who received a $10 cash award were Aurora Confer, Cael Day, Easton Feerrar, Whitt McCloskey, Sophie Snook, Brantleigh Stover and Mara Winiarski.
The third place winner of this year's essay writing contest was Adalynn Snook, a daughter of Ashley Mann, of Beech Creek. Adalynn is in Dr. Weaver's classroom. She received a $25 cash award.
The second place winner was Violet Moore, a daughter of Jared and Hollie Moore, of Blanchard. Violet is in Mrs. Smith's classroom at Liberty Curtin. She received a $50 cash award for her writing efforts.
The first place winner of the 2025 Americanism Essay Contest was Scarlet Thomas, a daughter of Nick and Holly Thomas, of Blanchard. Scarlet is also in Mrs. Smith's classroom. She earned a $100 cash award for her winning essay.
