HOWARD -- Howard Area Lions Club was formed in 1976, with some 65 men signing the official charter. Of those 65, only a handful are still living and active with the club.
During the last few years, the club opened their membership roll to invite women to join.
Local affirmed members of the club include Ethel Kellerman, Thelma Womer, Connie Eldridge and Jennifer Donough. Lion Denny Bechdel serves as the medical equipment coordinator for the club.
Howard Area Lions Club loans out items such as walkers, wheel chairs, shower chairs, hospital beds and a host of other items that are offered free of charge to those needing them.
The Howard Area Lions Club was happy to have 14-G District Governor Steve Myers visit the club for a meeting recently.
The Lions gather each month for their business meetings which are held at the Yearick Center in Howard. During his visit, DG Myers proudly announced that the local club is the largest in the state of PA for membership. Currently the club boasts 98 members who all strive to live up to the Lions motto, "We Serve!"
Also featured at the meeting were Lions Club banners and a remote controlled lion that was built by the late Lester Beck, a business owner and Lions club member. The lion is capable of moving its head and tail and can be heard giving a roar at club functions.
