WILLIAMSPORT — Watercolor Artist Anni Matsick will present her approach to painting the human face and figure at the Bald Eagle Art League monthly meeting on Thursday, Jan. 2, 2025, from 6:30-8 p.m., at the Thomas Taber Museum, located at 858 W. 4th St., Williamsport, Pa. This presentation is free and open to the public.
In her artist statement she explains, “My focus is the human face and figure but my paintings are more than portraits. I hope to intrigue and invite the viewer to imagine their own story. Drawing is an important part of my process, and the underpinning lines are often left visible and even enhanced. After many years of painting realistically I now forfeit control and let intuition guide me. Layers of thin watercolor washes build a sense of atmosphere and mystery. The uneven edges hold a relationship with the paper, fading in and out, allowing the composition to grow and breathe.”
Anni Matsick has over 30 years of experience as a freelance illustrator specializing in the children’s market, working for major publishers of children’s educational, periodicals and trade publications, represented by Cornell & Company, Westport, Conn. She is noted for illustrating the Goofus and Gallant feature in Highlights Magazine for nine years, ending in 2005. The artist holds a BFA in Painting from Carnegie Mellon University.
Two of her watercolor paintings are included in Splash 19: The Illusion of Light from North Light Books. Her works have been shown and awarded prizes in numerous regional and national juried exhibitions, including Art of the State: Pennsylvania, Watercolor USA, and Pittsburgh Society of Illustrators 10th and 20th anniversary shows at Heinz History Center.
Anni serves as Rules & Jurying Chair for the Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts and is the longtime chair for the Art Alliance of Central Pennsylvania’s Recycled Show. She is the Membership Chair for the Pennsylvania Watercolor Society. Anni’s home/studio is in Boalsburg, Pa., where she lives with her husband, Lou.
