If you found "A Quiet Place" to be eerie, or disturbing, I have a highly immersive game that will put you at the heart of this post-apocalyptic world.
"A Quiet Place: The Road Ahead" is a 2024 single-player survival horror game taking place in the same universe as both movies.
The game was developed by Stormind Games and published by Saber Interactive, and upon its release received mixed reviews.
Currently on Steam, the game has mostly positive reviews.
The storyline presented in the game is obviously important -- it's the tale the creators want to tell, after all -- but for me it wasn't the most important part.
I didn't particularly care about the main characters, the game doesn't do a great job of making you care for them (or maybe I'm heartless?).
On the surface, the plot is very simple. The asthmatic main character, Alex, is trying to survive in a world invaded with alien creatures with hypersensitive hearing.
Alongside her boyfriend, Martin, they take shelter in a hospital along with other survivors. During a supply run, Alex learns she is pregnant and honestly? Everything goes downhill from there for our protagonist.
A lot of stuff happens very quickly, which left me in a detached mindset when it came to the main character and those she holds dear.
Despite the lackluster storyline, the game mechanics are very well thought out. The whole point of both the film and the game is to make as little noise as possible, but you are constantly thrown into situations where you can't help it.
You're able to adjust the speed in which you open doors or grates to reduce the noise you create, you can walk over sand to quiet your footsteps. You can throw cans or rocks in the opposite direction of your character to create noise and draw the creatures away.
At one point in the game I crunched on a pile of broken glass and felt my heart stutter like it would have if this was a real life scenario.
The game is FANTASTIC at putting you in the thick of it.
I previously reviewed "Alien Isolation" and praised its stealth mechanic. THIS game has an even better stealth mechanic -- it even has an option to turn on your microphone in real life! The creature can hear your real-life breathing and any conversation you're having, which is great if you're streaming this game and want an extra challenge.
As I've previously noted, I am not great at video games despite loving them. That being said, I found this game very difficult even in "normal" mode. Any little sound triggers the creatures, and staying alive is tricky.
The first person aspect of the gameplay makes it even trickier to see what is going on around you. Your field of view is limited to what is directly in front of you, or what is on the edges of your periphery.
Lastly, I want to talk about the graphics of this game. The game was made using Unreal Engine 5 and looks absolutely stunning. The environment itself is beautiful, and because it's not full of clunky visuals, it makes it easy to see the potential dangers all around.
If you're at all interested in the movie, I highly suggest giving the game a try. At a price point of $30 it is well worth your money.
