BELLEFONTE — A new children’s book written and illustrated by two Centre County women is shining a light on the beauty of community and the everyday magic of small-town living.
“Ellie Mae Explores: Hometown,” written by Bellefonte-based author Ellen Matis and illustrated by State College artist Angie Bowman, officially launched this week through Spring Cedars Publishing. The book is the first in the Ellie Mae Explores series, which will highlight the charm and character of rural life.
The story follows Ellie Mae as she explores her town, discovering the familiar shops, friendly faces, and hidden spots that make it feel like home. With nostalgic illustrations and a heartfelt message, the book invites children and families to celebrate the unique places they call their own.
“This book was inspired by my deep love for small towns and the power of community,” said Matis. “I wanted to create something that reminds families to slow down, look closer and find the beauty right outside their door.”
Bowman brought the story to life with her warm, detailed art. A longtime designer and illustrator, Bowman drew inspiration from her own love of nature and rural communities.
“I wanted each page to feel familiar to anyone who grew up in or around a small town,” she said.
“Ellie Mae Explores: Hometown” is now available in paperback, hardcover, and ebook formats through Spring Cedars and on most online platforms where books are sold.
The duo hopes the book will be available locally in a variety of bookstores and boutiques.
