CTL to present ‘Legally Blonde the Musical’
Performances begin June 19
WILLIAMSPORT — Community Theatre League is turning up the pink this summer with “Legally Blonde The Musical,” running June 19-21 and June 25-28 as part of CTL’s Season 49.
Based on the beloved film and award-winning Broadway musical, Legally Blonde follows Elle Woods as she heads to Harvard Law School determined to win back the man who underestimated her. Along the way, Elle discovers her own strength, confidence and voice in a story packed with humor, heart, and unforgettable music.
Known for its infectious energy and empowering message, “Legally Blonde The Musical” has become a favorite among audiences of all ages thanks to iconic songs including “Omigod You Guys,” “So Much Better” and “Bend and Snap.”
CTL’s new production offers a fresh contemporary approach to the musical with inventive staging and a bold visual style that puts Elle’s journey at the center of the experience.
“On the surface, Legally Blonde is bright, funny and incredibly entertaining, but underneath all of that is a story that still resonates in a very real way,” said Seth Sponhouse, executive artistic director of Community Theatre League. “The show explores what it means to be underestimated, especially as a woman trying to navigate spaces that weren’t always built to take her seriously. Even though the story comes out of the early 2000s, so many of those themes surrounding power dynamics, gender expectations, image and credibility are conversations we are still having today.”
Sponhouse says the musical was an easy addition to CTL’s Season 49 lineup because of both its entertainment value and its continued relevance.
“Elle walks into Harvard and people immediately decide who they think she is based on how she looks,” Sponhouse said. “That idea hasn’t disappeared. What makes the story so powerful is watching her succeed without giving up the parts of herself people told her she needed to change. She proves that intelligence, femininity, ambition, and kindness can all exist together.”
While the production embraces the fun, humor and iconic moments audiences expect from Legally Blonde, CTL’s version also leans into the emotional core of the story through a visually contemporary and theatrical presentation.
“It’s still the fun, high-energy musical audiences love,” Sponhouse added. “You’ll laugh, you’ll leave humming the songs and you’ll probably want to wear pink afterward. But at its heart, this is a story about self-worth, confidence, and refusing to let other people define your potential.”
Performance dates for “Legally Blonde The Musical” are June 19-21 and June 25-28 at Community Theatre League.
