Local Rotary Clubs Sponsor Winning Youth

2 min read

LOCK HAVEN -- The annual Rotary Youth Leadership Awards Conference for Rotary District 7360 was held in June at Juniata College. Three local Rotary clubs were among the 31 that sent a total of 68 future leaders to the conference.

The RYLA Conference was a four-day program, featuring ice-breakers, team-building, speakers, Shelter Box information, an open mic night, beach, picnic and dance party at Raystown Lake, and lots of opportunities to share ideas and make lifelong friendships.

The youth participated in groups to come up with projects promoting the Rotary theme, "Service above self." They identified a problem or concern in their community, wrote a working plan to address it, and created displays to accompany their plans. Their projects were judged by community members and counselors, and the project group involving students from the three local clubs was named the winner.

The group consisted of Taylor Miller, sponsored by the Mill Hall Sunrise club; Lock Haven Rotary's Jocelyn Wallace; Zach Eck, sponsored by the Downtown Lock Haven club; and Adam Schram and Vivienne Cooper, sponsored by State College Sunrise. Their project was "Composting in Schools."

Their sponsoring clubs received $325 for each student, to be used for 2018 RYLA scholarships.

The 2018 RYLA Conference is set for June 17 to 20 at Juniata College.
