BASKET BENEFIT
Friendship Community Center in Beech Creek will host a basket benefit for Nena Haines today, Jan. 24, from 2-8 p.m. Nena is recovering from a serious medical condition which left her without the use of her legs. Nena and her husband Chuck Rider live in Blanchard. She is the daughter of Dwayne and Darla Haines. Nena was self-employed and hasn't been able to work since her hospitalization began back in October. Nena is making good progress with her physical therapy, but could use our support at this benefit and our prayers, too.
On Wednesday evening there were about 20 baskets and items donated for this benefit and I hope more will come in for Friday afternoon. Please consider putting together a basket or donating items for the benefit and get them to the Friendship Community Center from noon to 2 today. You can drop a monetary gift in the container for Nena that will be there for that purpose. Restaurant gift cards, gas cards, grocery store or Wal-Mart gift cards are always great ideas for you to donate to these types of benefits.
It's always fun to see the different ideas and themes that people use for their baskets.There's a "Sweet Treat" donation promised that will have a freshly made peanut butter pie in it.There's a "Pamper Your Pet" basket that will make your dog very happy. I noticed a "Stay Healthy" basket that had a throw blanket, cough drops, teabags and other products to help you ward off a cold or the flu. Fay Confer's peanut butter fudge is always a big hit and she'll be donating a couple containers for this benefit, too.
Sheri Dreibelbis at Yellow House in Howard has donated three baskets. One contains a ceramic warmer and eight different simmering oil scents that she makes. Another basket is full of Amish books by different authors and the third basket has a Tote bag, a 1000 piece Sandy Clough puzzle and greeting cards, adult coloring books, two Christian authored books, and various other Christian items.
I put together a "Snow Day" basket that has things you'll need to get thru a snow day. You'll be able to put the hat, scarf and gloves on to go outside to shovel or treat your sidewalks with the ice melt. There's hand warmers and chapstick, too. When you come back in from the cold you'll want to wash your hands with the scented hand soap and put the hand lotion on. To warm up, you can have a mug of hot cocoa and heat some chicken noodle soup. To warm up your kitchen you can bake cookies and decorate them with colored sprinkles. There's card games for the kids to play, word search books, snacks to eat and packs of gum. There's a soft fleece throw for you to curl up with and a good book containing three stories to read. I put it all on a red toboggan sled because we're never too old to enjoy a sled ride when we have snow.
It's so fun to be able to put together these donations and to have this benefit to provide some financial help to Nena and her husband Chuck. Stop by to let her know that she's been in your prayers. She and her family are planning to be at the benefit to see and thank those coming and going.
CEMETERY MEETING
Jacksonville Cemetery Association will hold their annual meeting tomorrow, Jan.25, at the Emmanuel Church of Christ social hall. The meeting will begin at 1 p.m. and all cemetery lot owners and those interested in serving on the cemetery board or volunteering are encouraged to attend. SAUSAGE SALE
Howard Fire Company is having a sausage sale with order pick-up scheduled for Feb. 15. Orders are needed before Feb. 10.
There will be salt & pepper loose sausage at $4 per pound; loose Breakfast Sage (is pretty bitey) for $4 a pound; Hot Italian stuffed and Sweet Italian stuffed are both $4.50 a pound and there will be a limited supply of scrapple at $8 per pound.
Fire Chief Collin Alterio works at the Insurance Office with me so we have an order sheet here if you'd like to drop by or call in an order to 814-625-2488 during weekday office hours.
RYAN'S PROJECT
Ryan Young is planning his senior project to benefit the Friendship Community Center in Beech Creek. Ryan will be asking for donations and raising money to be able to pave the parking lot area at the FCC. Several estimates for the paving have already been received, and Ryan needs to raise $12,800 for Eby Paving to do the project this spring.
Ryan is a senior at Central Mountain this year and is a special needs student. He is the son of Mark and Fay Confer of Beech Creek. Ryan chose the FCC as his project because his mother Fay is actively involved at the FCC and Ryan has tagged along with her to events and meetings that have been held there.
Ryan will begin his senior project hours by preparing letters and asking local businesses and individuals for their monetary support so that he can raise all of the money that is needed for the paving. If you'd like to contribute to Ryan's goal please send your tax-deductible donation to Friendship Community Center, PO Box 218, Beech Creek, PA 16822 and put "Ryan's Paving Project" on the memo line.
I will have more details about Ryan's Paving Project over the next few weeks, and I am hoping that our local community will shower this special young man with your support so that he reaches his goal. The paving will certainly benefit everyone who visits the FCC since the parking area now is stoned, uneven and sometimes muddy.
CLUBHOUSE BINGO
Liberty Township Sportsmen's Club will offer a bingo night on Jan. 30. Normally, the club has bingo on the first and third Thursday evenings of the month, but since January has a fifth Thursday this year there will be an extra bingo night. The clubhouse doors and the kitchen open at 5 and the early bird game begins at 6:15. Regular bingo starts at 6:30.
