SPAGHETTI SUPPER
Howard United Methodist Church will host a spaghetti dinner today, March 6, from 5-6:30 p.m. The meal includes spaghetti (both meatless or vegetarian), salad, rolls, desserts and beverages. Cost is $10 for adults, $5 for ages 5-12 and little tykes under age 5 eat free.
The proceeds from the dinner will support the Howard Scout Troop.
SAFE DRIVING COURSE
Last year Insurance Office, Inc. sponsored a 55 Alive Safe Driving Course at the Howard fire hall to allow participants to save on their auto insurance premium.
If there are others who would be interested in taking an 8-hour course (offered in segments of four hours on two days) or a 4-hour refresher course for those who have taken the course in the last three years you can sign up now.
The cost would be $20 to take the course and if there's enough interest I would pick the dates in April with instructor John Eck.
You would save much more on your auto insurance premium than the $20 spent to take the class and the savings is good for three years on your insurance policy. If you're age 55 or older and a member of AARP and have a valid membership card then the cost for the class is only $15 per person.
If you're interested in taking the course please call Insurance Office, Inc. at 814-625-2488 to let me know to put you on our list. We need 10 people to register before March 21 for the classes to be scheduled.
CEMETERY CLEAN-UP
The Jacksonville Cemetery Association will be holding their annual spring clean-up of the cemetery grounds on Saturday, March 14, beginning at 9 a.m.
Lot owners who wish to save items that are currently on the graves should make arrangements to retrieve those decorations before the clean-up day. Otherwise the items will be discarded to the dumpster there.
Jacksonville Cemetery Association always holds their spring clean-up on the second Saturday in March each year, weather permitting. Call Joyce at 814-359-0307 with any questions about the I'm sure other local cemeteries will be holding their clean-ups soon, too. It's a good idea to remove your decorations so that something you'd like to keep isn't thrown away by those handling the clean-up tasks and it makes their job easier on deciding what should be kept or discarded.
UPCOMING EVENTS
Howard Lions Food Bank distribution will be on March 16 for residents in the Beech Creek area and those from Centre County in the Lions service area that missed their distribution date earlier this month. Be sure to bring your boxes back each month so that the Lions have them to fill up for you again.
Lions Bingo will be held on March 12 and 26 at the Beech Creek Fire Company social hall. Doors and the kitchen are open at 5 p.m. and bingo games start at 6:30.
On March 17 there will be a Genealogy class at the Friendship Community Library in Beech Creek for those who want to learn resources and tips on finding family information. There will be two class times available. One begins at 3:30 and the second begins at 5:30. Pre-registration is encouraged so that supplies can be ready. Call the Library at 570-962-2048 from 3-7 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday or Thursday.
Howard United Methodist Church will hold a Soup Sale and luncheon on Thursday, March 19, from 11 to 1 at the church fellowship hall. The meal for $6 will include your choice of soup, a roll, piece of pie and beverage. Quarts of soup can be preordered for freezing by calling Patti at 814-625-2182. Take-out orders should be called in by Sunday, March 15. The soup flavors this month are vegetable beef, ham and bean, chicken corn and chicken noodle. Proceeds from this soup sale will benefit the employees of Hall's Market in Snow Shoe who will be out of work for several months following the store fire on February 25.
Liberty Township Sportsmen's Association will offer Clubhouse Bingo on March 19. Doors and the kitchen open at 5 p.m. with the early bird bingo game beginning at 6:15. Clubhouse Bingo is held on the first and third Thursday evenings at the club located along Marsh Creek Road, Howard.
The Nittany Valley Amish will offer a Wedding-style meal on March 21 at the Hublersburg fire hall from noon to 7 p.m. You can pick your dinner hour that you want to eat. The 5 and 6 p.m. slots fill up quickly and there may be a waiting period so you may want to choose an earlier hour to eat. Walk-ins and take-out meals are available. To make a reservation call Katie at 814-383-2008. Proceeds from this meal will help support the Amish schools in our area.
The Virginia Rose Foundation will have their annual benefit auction on March 28 at the Friendship Community Center in Beech Creek. More information will be coming as this event draws closer.
Friendship Community Center in Beech Creek will hold a Spring Bazaar on April 3 from 6-9 p.m. and on April 4 from 9-1. Vendors are needed and tables are available by calling Sandy at 570-962-2397.
PROJECT IDEAS
There are some projects that may be of interest to those needing to fulfill their high school senior project or Eagle Scout requirements.
Howard Fire Company would like to have a new digital marquee. The fire company already has some ideas for the new marquee and the project mentor would be fire company member Josh Collins.
The fire company would certainly be supportive of the individual(s) who would like to take on this project as far fundraising to pay for it and the installation of the new marquee. Howard Borough Council representatives and local church officials are favorable to the new marquee proposal since it could be used to inform of all activities in the Howard area.

Blanchard Baptist Cemetery would like to have a fundraiser or two this spring or summer to benefit the cemetery for the upkeep and mowing of the cemetery grounds in Blanchard. The treasurer is running very low on perpetual care funds so donations are needed quickly and a nice fundraiser would certainly be helpful to pay for the mowing costs since the cemetery is not supported by a church. Call Carol at 814-383-4258 if you would be interested in planning a fundraiser to help out.
